COLE SEEDER WOULDN’T MAKE it another week. Another day
tore at his skin.
He needed a woman. Badly. Desperately. Any would suffice. Cole wasn’t
picky—not about this, not about getting off.

He preferred an older woman—one without scruples, without
embarrassment. A woman who craved being on top, spread wide, her hands
scratching at his knees. A woman who wouldn’t cry or bite when he didn’t
caress or stroke.

It was best that way. Cole detached, controlled. If he didn’t squeeze, he
couldn’t bruise.

His reigning rule. No repeats. No attachments. No connections. No streak
of pity in their eyes when he asked for more time, another night, dinner.
After years of the same result, his rule protected him. A lifetime of
loneliness. Except…
He shifted his legs. The chair was too small, pinching his hips. He willed
himself to be lighter, to not snap the curved plastic legs.
Everything was too small for him. Even on the Mountaineers’ campus, in
rooms designed specifically for professional football players, he was
oversized. Thighs too thick. Shoulders awkwardly broad.
With practiced dexterity, he flicked his toothpick to the other side of his
mouth and wrapped his tongue around the sharpened end to tease the point.
Yes. A woman. That’s what he needed.
Anyone but this one.

Miles had already gotten to her. The running back was quick on and off
the field.
“This is a standard clause in your contract,” Sonja was saying. “We’re
here to address any issues that could come up in the media regarding you.”
She crossed her legs to match his. “To be frank, I’m looking for concerns.
Red flags.”
Cole had met Sonja Lawal three minutes ago. She kept her tone
businesslike, crisp and formal, as she spun her chair to fetch a file from a
modern black filing cabinet.

Head of PR was a good gig. Private office. A large enough window to
keep alive a trimmed bonsai tree. Room to tack a few personal photographs
on the walls. Sonja at the Grand Canyon, her in a sickly yellow gown and
graduation cap.

Her hair was brighter now, a shimmering white blonde that cascaded off
tanned cheeks. Cole pegged her to have five years on him, around thirtyone. Young to be managing an NFL team’s bad press. Must be highly
competent.
In direct opposition to her behavior today.

Short and shapely, she leaned over her glass desk and flipped open the
manila folder. “Let’s see.” She wiped her palms on her gray pencil skirt and
began reading the particulars of Cole’s career. Quarterback in high school,
recruited as a tackle to BYU. Four years, no degree. Invited to the Combine,
entered the draft, became a Houston Texan. Now, two weeks into his fourth
season, he was a Mountaineer.

Cole nodded along, wondering how many people knew of Miles and
Sonja.
Everyone?
They’d been damn careless.

Crinkled shirt collar, lipstick smudged on her bottom lip, and her hair had
a harsh kink in it, like it had once been in a ponytail, but she’d yanked it
out.
Miles had left his mark. Not just on Sonja.
