RAINA

Why was there an open suitcase, fully packed with her husband’s clothes,
on the bed? Was Jack going on a trip she didn’t know about? Or was…
Raina squeezed her eyes shut.
Was he serious about a separation?
“Hey,” she called, walking across the spacious bedroom toward his
bathroom and walk-in closet. “I came home early.”
As she passed the bed and glanced at the contents of the suitcase, her
heart dropped. That was…a lot of clothes. Not a quick trip. More like a
lengthy escape.

On a sigh, she dipped one shoulder to slide off her laptop case and
handbag, then the other to drop the messenger bag her assistant had filled
with files and contracts. From inside one of them, her phone buzzed, but she
ignored it, shaking off her suit jacket and tossing it on the bed.
Worry curled like a smoky tendril in her chest.
He wouldn’t leave her, would he? Yes, he’d been furious that she’d
opposed his latest acquisition, and they’d argued.

But a married couple who shared a thriving real estate firm could be
expected to have a disagreement from time to time. Good heavens, yesterday
morning, hours before that fight, they’d been…intimate. Wasn’t that the
normal ebb and flow of a sixteen-year marriage?
He wouldn’t give up on them because of a business dispute…would he?
“Jack?” Raina called again when he didn’t answer, stepping into the
vestibule that led to his personal area in their shared bedroom.

The “two baths with separate dressing rooms” in the main suite had been
her husband’s brainchild when they’d gutted and redesigned the luxury home
in the upscale Coral Gables community known as Cocoplum. Jack said he’d
sold enough multimillion-dollar homes to Miami’s uber-rich to insist the
feature was a must-have for couples who wanted personal privacy in their
posh primary suite.

And, of course, he was thinking about resale, since selling expensive
homes—even his own—was always top of mind to Jack Wallace. And Raina,
who’d been raised and mentored by a real estate genius, had agreed.
But sometimes that dual bathroom made her feel distant from him. She
missed the true intimacy of brushing their teeth together like they did when
they were first married, back when they shared a sink, big dreams, and so
many toothpastey laughs and kisses before bed.

When had those halcyon days disappeared? When had it become as much
about their business partnership as their marriage? It had happened slowly,
insidiously. Staleness had crept in, and laughs and kisses had somehow
become fights about…acquisitions.
“Maybe it’s time to rethink this partnership, Raina.”
