Amir looked every inch the consummate boardroom warrior as he stood
and officially opened the peace talks. He had that ‘rich guy on safari’ look,
with all the right gear that seemed like the best money could buy, even if it
hadn’t gotten dirty yet.

After discussions with Hendricks and a few others, we had agreed he
should lead the talks and act as its chairman. I mean, we had to throw the
guy a bone after he’d financed everything only to find himself out of a job.
Plus, it was what he was used to doing, back when the world was not as it
was now. Getting hostile rivals together in a room and hammering out a
deal which would advance his own position in the world was his thing. He
was a lawyer, a businessman, and the family company had grown so large it
owned more proprietary technology than most governments.

Representatives of both the Three Hills and the Springs had readily
agreed to attend. Both communities had suffered greatly in the “Battle of
The Source” as people were calling it.

Hendricks had said it as a flippant remark and it had stuck, as it had the
ring of many other battles throughout time that had changed the course of
history. And the most recent battle in humanity’s long tenure of planet Earth
had certainly done that. For the first time in almost a millennium, peace was
a real possibility between two communities who for so long had been
bitterly divided.

Since The Tanaka had been killed the Springs had been mostly leaderless,
with the majority of their warriors either killed or injured, and they were not
in a strong position to negotiate anything.
Tanaka’s death still haunted me a little. I hadn’t seen it, but hearing that
the women he had treated as slaves brutally murdered him as they were
bathing him painted a graphic picture in my mind. He’d been killed in
revenge for countless acts of barbarism and cruelty, and the women had all
taken their turn and done a Caesar on his ass for every injustice they or their
loved ones had suffered under him.

Harrison, the elected leader of the Three Hills knew this, but was astute
enough to realize now was not the time to give his erstwhile enemies a hard
time. It was the time to grasp the opportunity that was being presented to
them all; the opportunity to live in harmony and collaboration. He sat
smiling at the Elders of the Springs who had filled the vacuum left by the
death of their tyrannical dictator.

The Elders did not look nearly as comfortable as they glanced nervously
around at, what was to them at least, the otherworldly looking compound
created out of the pods from space. They knew the poor position they were
in, but also knew that they needed to be there to do the best they could for
their beleaguered community.
