Ellie never liked me picking her up from school, and even if it brought
me great pleasure to see her flustered, that was not the reason why I
did it. I just couldn’t bring myself to leave it to buses or any other form of
transport.

So, every afternoon, I closed up shop at the city mall and rushed over to
the Great Neck South high school, sitting by the curb and watching the red
brick exterior of the school with the pink blossoms by the side in full bloom
and softly moving in the cool air. I sat in my Corolla bobbing my head
along to whatever hip-hop tone playing on the radio. And for those
moments, I made sure all other memories were gone.

Ellie always came out with Seline, her best friend, the two of them
separating at the car. Today, she came out alone, her eyes searching for my
car and finding it behind a Subaru that had a North Face sticker on both
sides of the back windscreen. I’d snorted seeing it. It was the go to for every
other Subaru. I was one to talk, though, with my black and white I-red heart
emoji-NYC sticker sitting proudly on the back bumper.
I waved to Ellie and she grinned, walking over to the car.
She opened the door and got in at the front with me, putting on her
seatbelt.

“Hey cupcake, how was school today?” I asked.
“School would like you to stop coming to pick me up and drop me, you
know? I’m sixteen,” she answered, instantly connecting to the car’s stereo.
Here goes Drake and the Weeknd, I groaned inwardly. It was all she
listens to if she isn’t listening to Olivia Rodriguez, that is.

“Well, school would definitely mind driving all the way past the 495 and
up the Lakeville Road till they get to Great Neck plaza.”
“We’re not having this argument today, Dad,” she replied, putting on one
of the new Drake songs from his recent album that she loved, but honestly,
jarred my ears to no end.
