I STOOD OUTSIDE MY new neighbor’s door, shivering in my coat.
Careful not to tip the plate of fresh, homemade chocolate chip cookies, I
pressed the doorbell.
“Coming!” a man yelled from inside. I hadn’t met the new neighbor,
hence my visit, and a thousand questions danced in my mind. Shush, girl, I
told myself, focused on the footsteps approaching the door. Within seconds,
a man in his early forties stared down at me, scrutinizing me and my
cookies.
Hey, these were good cookies!
“Hi, I’m Rachel,” I said with my best smile. “Your new neighbor, I know
you moved in a few days ago and thought some cookies would be a lovely
welcome! Hope you like chocolate!”
“I’m Sean.” He looked down at the cookies, accepting the plate, but
looking a bit like he didn’t quite know what to do with them. “Thank you,”
he finally muttered.
Everyone in the town of Mistletoe knew each other. It was so small, and
everyone also loved Christmas, hence the name of our town. Most people
moved here to celebrate Christmas all year long, and this was precisely the
reason I loved welcoming newcomers. To see their eyes light up when I
invite them to whatever next Christmas event was taking place.
This close to Christmas, and with a film crew in town, he was in for a
treat.
“Since you got here late and you don’t seem to have any decorations up,
why don’t you join us for the Christmas tree lighting ceremony on
Saturday?”
Was that a scowl on his face? It flickered for just a second, but I was
pretty sure that had been a scowl. “I don’t think I can make it. I’ve got a lot
of things to do, and I still haven’t settled in completely.”
“But it’ll be fun, I promise! Plus, the whole town takes part in it! I can
introduce you around!”
Okay, that was definitely a scowl. A quickly deepening scowl.
“Thanks for the invite and all, but I really need to get back to the stuff I
was working on.” He wasn’t even trying to hide the fact that he was lying
about being thankful for the invite.
Wow. Well, they didn’t call me Mistletoe’s Christmas Ambassador for no
reason. I put on my best, friendliest face.
“Maybe I can help you get settled in and get your decorations up? It’ll
cheer up the entire neighborhood!”
He glanced left and right and gave me an incredulous look. “The
neighborhood is already very cheery.” I mean, sure, every other house had
lights up, but this was a tradition.
