It took her thirty minutes to let her mind ease enough that she could think
straight. Colleen didn’t care for the man sitting across from her laughing it up
like he’d heard the best joke ever. Trying to stand now that she was feeling a
little better, she told him that he wasn’t all that funny.

All they’d done was touch their fingers to each other. A normal greeting
that everyone did. Put out your hand and expect a small bit of warmth, then
you parted ways. But as soon as he touched her, she and he both had been
knocked three ways from Sunday with her head pounding like a jackhammer.
Looking down on the man, Warren, she knew who he was now, and he
didn’t look like he fared any better than she had. At least, she didn’t think so.
There was blood on his cheek, but the wound looked as if it had already
healed. She asked him if he was all right.

Warren leaned back against the wall and casually crossed his legs in
front of him. “No, this is starting to be a pattern. But something else that we
can lay to rest, too, is that you’re not my mate. What was that blast? This is
the second time I’ve been knocked off my feet by a woman in this household,
and each time I get a little more magic. I’m assuming that you did as well.”
Colleen told him that she did feel different. “I do as well. Like I’ve been
energized and had the life sucked out of me at the same time.”

“I do hope that you’re not blaming that on me. I only meant to greet
you.” He said he had the same thing in mind when he’d put out his hand.
“Well then, I don’t have time to hang out here in the hallway with a rude
man. I’ve things to—you told my brother about me being blackmailed, didn’t
you?”

“No. I didn’t know about that at the time. I only knew that you were
broke. I’m happy that it turned out well for you.” She told him that it was still
ongoing, but the man wasn’t bothering her any longer. “Then it’s all good.
I’m sorry if I—”

“You didn’t do anything wrong. I’m glad that you did that for me. It’s
difficult for me to ask for help, so you made it easier on me. I did want to
thank you for that.” He told her that it was his pleasure. “I’m starting to feel
some of whatever came to me in that blast. I can now feel where people are.

Not their emotions, but just know that there is a man in town that is thinking
about his late wife and what a terrible person she was to have saddled him
with four children. I don’t know the entire story, but just enough to make me
want to go and help him. Or kill him. Until I figure out why he’d be thinking
that, I’m withholding judgment for now.”
