“At what point are we supposed to get our shit together?”
“Never,” replies Zoe. The only interest she shows at a pivotal moment in
my career is to her nails.
After a quick glance around the showroom, I zero in on the almost life size bronze tiger statue guarding the door. The one with a price tag sitting
around its neck that makes my eyes bulge. It’s that kind of store. My lips
form a flat line and I focus on the task in hand—staring between two desks.
A couple of weeks ago, Sooz, our bun-wearing ringleader, left for Cape
Town to visit her family. With Next Level PR in the hands of the rest of us
—Abby, Zoe, Amanda, and I—she left me with this task. The Desk Task.
Capital letters included. It’s my opportunity to pull a win out of the bag for
the team, but I can’t help feeling lost, like an underdog dressed in sample
clothing. Like I shouldn’t be here doing this. Like life has another plan for
me. I just wish I knew what.
When I told her we needed to go shopping, Zoe’s eyes had lit up. The
spark was put right back out the second she had realized it was for furniture.
Work-related furniture.
“Why is this so hard?” I groan, glancing between the two desks again.
When I crossed into the land of thirty, I thought making decisions would
get easier. The answer should be simple. After all, there are only two
obvious choices. Pink or white. Yet we’ve been standing for over thirty
minutes in the same store, still no closer to deciding.
I smooth my hands over the black suit pants I’m wearing, and a wave of
irritation passes through me when my fingers catch on a loose thread. The
store assistant hovering in the background—the one wearing a snooty
expression that complements her outfit from Saks—is probably wondering
why we’re here. We don’t exactly fit the vibe, thanks to Zoe being dressed
like a Japanese Anime character. Apparently, it’s trending on TikTok, and
because ignorance is bliss, I didn’t get her to expand any further as we left
the office. I don’t want to spend my time worrying what she’s planning to
do, dressed like she is.
