Standing at the front of the conference room table at Goddess Glow
Cosmetics, I used the laser pointer to circle the sales figures
summarized in the first column of the presentation.
“We met last month’s sales goal, and year-to-date we’re in a really good
place, people. That’s all thanks to you and your hard work. We can
officially call the Mother’s Day campaign a success.”
Applause sounded from six managers around the small table in the
boardroom.
After the clapping stopped, I rested my hands on my hips. “Of course
you know, we can’t rest on our laurels.” I raised an eyebrow.
A soft chuckle went around the room. They all knew I didn’t play about
business, and while I was happy with their performance, I meant what I
said. They needed to continue to do well so we could close out this year in
good shape. If sales continued as projected, we would have a five percent
increase over last year’s profits, which meant bonuses not only for the
management team but also for the staff.
After a few minutes, the meeting ended and the managers filed out of
the room.
“How are those wedding plans going?” I asked Penelope, one of the
managers.
“Better than expected. I can’t believe my daughter’s getting married,
and to such a wonderful man. I’ll finally get some grandbabies!” She
couldn’t stop smiling.
“I think that’s the most important part for you, isn’t it?” I asked,
amused.
It never ceased to amaze me how obsessed people became about babies.
My parents were the same way. They went from hinting to giving up when
they finally accepted I was not going to give them grandchildren, and they
should concentrate their efforts on my brother and sister if they wanted any.
“Not the most important,” she said, smiling. “I do want my daughter to
be happy, of course, but the grandkids are a definite plus.”
“Well, have a safe trip.”
“Thank you,” Penelope said with a grateful smile, before she
disappeared out the door.
I cradled the folders I’d brought into the room against my chest and
turned out the light. On my way down the hallway, I ran into a familiar
face. One that grated on my nerves.
Tiffany Busby. Young, gorgeous, a great figure, and sleeping with
Pierre, my ex-husband.
I emitted a low groan as we flashed fake smiles at each other.
“How are you?” I asked in the most pleasant voice I could muster.
“Fine.” Tiffany tossed her long dark hair, as if a reminder to me that I
had a short, tapered haircut. She had a mean girl vibe and really got under
my skin. I desperately wanted to kick her twenty-seven-year-old ass.
“Pierre told me you’re attending the ceremony this weekend?” I asked,
hoping against hope that she’d changed her mind.
