“Miriam! Miriam, I need you in here right away!” Shouting at my
administrative assistant isn’t ever a smart move, but whatever
snarky retribution she doles out I’ll deal with later. Right now I
need answers and I don’t have the patience to wait for them.

“Miriam, what’s taking so long? Everything else can wait, I need you in
my office right now! Please.” I tack on the please at the end because while I
can deal with her irritation, even I won’t risk her actual fury. The woman’s a
town matriarch and has worked in the Candy Cane Key Mayor’s office since
before I was born.

Now that I’m the elected mayor, technically she works for me. Damned if
I’ll ever be the one foolish enough to try selling that claim. Not a charmed
thing happens on this whole holiday obsessed island without Miriam
knowing about it. In all fairness, I’m shocked she’s not already here in my
office, as maddened as I am about this absurd debacle.

This is Candy Cane Key. Candy. Cane. Key. From the topography of our
literal land mass in the larger collection of Florida’s Keys to the year round
decorations and events, we are a sunny and seasonably temperature homage
to all things Christmas. My administrative assistant wears tinkling bell
earrings in June and hats that are a cross between trucker caps and Santa
stocking caps in February.

Shops and restaurants have kitschy holiday names. The decor everywhere
from the wreaths hanging from the light poles to the tinsel and jingle themed
street names hark the holiday that never ends around here. Christmas is the
vibe. The whole vibe. The entire vibe. The exclusive vibe.

The crumpled up flier in my hands right now, the one I tore down from
the community bulletin board in the atrium of the City Hall building, is not a
Christmas vibe. It is, in fact, the extreme polar opposite of a Christmas vibe.
“Yes, oh exalted mayor tantrum, how may I serve you?” Miriam’s
sarcasm is a clear indicator that my attitude is gonna cost me.
