NATALIE ANDOLINI
She caught the beer bottle inches before it hit her face.
“Damn, what are you, a ninja?” Rob said. He spat out a drunk,
mirthful chuckle as he hefted his athletic frame from the bed and reached for
another dead soldier.
“I actually thought I loved you at one point,” she said, her tone cold.
Biting.
She’d caught him with another woman. Again. Not that she was surprised
and not that she particularly cared, but they shared an apartment together.
There were logistics to consider.
The next bottle flew in faster. She ducked aside, allowing it to smash into
the wall. Shattered glass sprinkled the back of her hair, catching in the
strands.
“What kind of man willingly drinks Rolling Rock?” Natalie said, her
heartbeat only a tick above resting.
Her now-ex-boyfriend laughed. “You used to be so much cooler, you
know? I thought you were hot when we first got together, but now look at
you. And tending bar in Chinatown? What a loser.”
She flipped the beer bottle over in her hand so she was holding the neck.
There were so many things she could do. She could break the bottle and
stab him with it. Or throw it right at his face—he was too drunk to catch it.
But she didn’t have the energy to care anymore.
She was so tired of it all. She was tired of bartending. She was tired of
scraping by. She was tired of Rob the Asshole, an ex-jock who still had a sixpack even though he ate like a starving horse. Her eyes went to the two pizza
boxes on the coffee table next to a litter of empty green beer bottles.
“The lease runs out tomorrow. You can keep the furniture and whatever
you want. I’ve already packed my bags.”
“Look at you, making big plans. It’s about time.”
Yeah, it sure was, all right. Today’s discovery was merely the latest in a
long series. But this time, he’d had the nerve to sleep with one of her
coworkers. She should have left after the first incident. But as embarrassing
as it was, she had no other place to go. No real friends in the area. And while
their one-bedroom at 77 H Street Northwest, just blocks from the nation’s
capital, wasn’t exactly a Four Seasons—or even a Motel 6—it was miles
better than a cardboard bed on the sidewalk.
“I can’t believe they ever paid you to fly planes,” Rob said, wobbling on
his feet. “Hey, maybe if you go down to Cracker Barrel, they’ll give you a job
as a hostess.”
How had she ever cared for him?
