Toby, we need to leave like five minutes ago,” Seth called out down
the hallway, hoping to get his son motivated to move along. It was
his first day in a new school, and therefore, important to make a good
impression. Something Seth had learned the art of many moons ago while
trying to make partner at Calhoun & Calhoun law offices. Until they closed
the doors, that is. All the long hours and hard work hadn’t done much good in
the end, but this was a six-year-old, and being on time was still an important
lesson.

His son came running down the hall, holding up one red sneaker, tears
glistening in his eyes. “I can’t find my other sneaker,” he said, his lower lip
trembling ever so softly as he sniffed.
“Where did you leave it? One would think it couldn’t be far from the one
you’re holding in your hand,” Seth offered, trying to jog his son’s memory.
“I looked, and I looked, but it’s gone. I think a monster ate it, and now I
can’t go to school.”

Suddenly, everything fell into place. This was Toby’s attempt to stay
home, his son having made no bones about the fact he wanted to stay home
and help Seth. His rationale was in thinking he didn’t need school when his
dad could teach him everything he needed right there at the ranch. And yes,
Seth could teach him about horses and ranching, but there were three
problems that stopped him.

One, he too, needed a better knowledge of what was entailed in running an
equine breeding ranch, especially given the terrible state of disrepair. Seth’s
experience had been through the eyes of a young boy, not a man running the
place. And now, with the ranch used as collateral on a loan for the start-up
expenses, everything was on the line. Failure was not an option.
Two, his son needed school learning. Teaching a first grader the core of an
education that would compound over the years wasn’t anything he was
qualified to do.

And three, there was the little matter of time and patience…neither of
which was a free-flowing commodity these days. “Let’s look together,” he
said, taking his son by the hand to lead him back towards his bedroom.
The room was decorated in blues and reds with tiny splashes of yellow…
Superman colors. It was the first room Seth had fixed up when they arrived at
the ranch, hoping to help Toby settle in easier if he was surrounded by his
favorite hero. Except there was nothing Superman-like about wanting to
avoid school because he was afraid. Although, combined with unhappy, Seth
was more than willing to give his son a pass. “Where did you find the one
you are holding?”

“Right there,” Toby said, pointing at an area of floor near the nightstand.
“And I looked and looked, so it’s no use. A monster got it. I just know it.”
The innocent look on his son’s face didn’t fool Seth, not in the least.
