A fist flew toward him, lightning fast. Charlie barely had time to jerk
away from the punch, and it struck his right shoulder instead of his
face. He grunted at the impact.
Come on, Charlie, you can do this. Stay quick on your feet. He wiped
trickles of sweat off his face with a gloved hand.
His opponent faced him in the ring, hardly looking winded. William Van
Houten was more machine than man, and much larger than Mr. Willoughby
had led Charlie to believe. But who was he kidding? Charlie needed the
money and would have agreed to the fight even if he’d known in advance
he’d be up against a giant.
A good head taller than Charlie’s own six feet, William’s broad chest and
arms rippled with muscle each time he danced away from one of Charlie’s
attempts at a strike. No wonder there wasn’t anyone else willing to fight
him. Each time William dodged one of Charlie’s jabs or a right hook, his
lips pulled into a taunting sneer.
Just one hit, that’s all I need for this to be worth it.
ACharlie bounced on his toes, circling William in the confined space of the
ring.
“Stop dancing and hit ‘im already!” A voice called out from the crowd
packed inside the sports club.
More jeers followed. Some patrons even went so far as booing. This was
bad for business, Charlie knew. The kind of boxing at this particular club
was just a more organized version of a street brawl. The patrons wanted a
show and Charlie was expected to give it to them. No one here cared if
Charlie got his brains bashed in, but he liked to avoid injury when he could.
Charlie concentrated on steadying his breaths, ignoring the hecklers and
the aches from the blows he’d already received from William’s unrelenting
fists.
“What’s the matter, Tulane? You wanna go home?” William came close
enough to hit, but Charlie resisted the urge. He’s goading you. Trying to get
you to lose focus. Just wait. “You need your momma to comfort you? How
old are you, Tulane? This fight is no place for a boy like you.” William
shook his mop of curly black hair out of his face, tipped his chin, and spat
on the mat.
All of Charlie’s careful restraint snapped on that one word. Boy. He
charged. Anger and recklessness made him momentarily courageous. Or
stupid. He couldn’t tell between the two sometimes.
William’s eyes widened right before Charlie’s fist slammed into his nose.
The bone broke with a satisfying crunch. Blood poured onto Charlie’s black
glove and dripped off William’s chin. Charlie kept at him. Another blow to
William’s face, one to his ribs, one to his stomach.
I’m not a boy! Charlie’s fists screamed with each hit. Even when he’d
looked like one, he hadn’t been a boy for ages. There were times in that
never changing place he hadn’t even been sure he’d been alive.
The crowd around the fighters roared.
