The young girl in my arm clings desperately to my chest, digging her
nails into my skin. It’s difficult to hang onto her while running. Yet,
with every last piece of strength that remains in my tired body, I grit my teeth
and keep moving.
Behind me, their shouts are loud and intimidating, demanding that I stop.
My feet pound against the uneven ground beneath me, doing my best not to
trip. If I do, I’ll crush her. Then, we’ll get caught.
“Ivy…” Julia whispers out my name, gazing up at me with wide, scared
eyes. They’re glossy with tears, which makes my heart break.
“Don’t worry, Julia,” I reply softly, tossing frequent glances over my
shoulder. “You’ll be okay. I promise.”
The dark elf merchants are gaining on us, I can sense their proximity. My
hold around the young girl tightens.
If I don’t act quickly, they’re going to take her. This is a calculated risk,
but there’s a strong chance that Julia will make it out of here unharmed.
As for me… well, I’m not too sure what’s going to happen, but that
doesn’t matter. Julia is young and innocent, with her whole life ahead of her.
I’d rather see all of Kario burn than to have those disgusting dark elves place
their hands on her.
There. It’s a perfect spot! I settle Julia underneath some bushes, helping
her cram into the small space so that she’s lying with her stomach on the
ground. The twigs and sharp leaves cut into her skin, but it’s a better fate than
what awaits her if the dark elves find her.
“Stay here,” I say, taking a quick look at my surroundings. “Don’t make a
sound. You’ll be safe here. When the coast is clear, you run. Run as far away
as you can.”
“Wait, but–”
“Don’t speak!”
A pang shoots through my chest as I leave Julia behind. The young girl
reaches out for me, but I back away and continue sprinting through the
woods, pretending that I’m still clutching onto her. The cloak encapsulating
my body makes that easier to feign.
