1602, North Uist, Hebrides, Scotland
Clan Macdonald
THE BITTER ICY wind bit at his skin like starving wee beasts gorging on a
fresh kill. Despite the biting cold, Evander Macdonald preferred it to facing
what he knew would be the hardest conversation of his life.

His father was dying, there was no escaping the truth, and yet it was what
he tried to do at the moment. The last months had been torturous, watching as
his once strong and virile father deteriorated slowly, each day able to do less
than the day before. Now his breathing was labored, the proud man had to
struggle for each breath, his face contorting with pain.

Evander’s boots crunched into the snow-covered ground as he made his
way through the thick forest. The buck he tracked was swift and would in all
probability escape death today. He cared little as it was not the true reason
he’d come out with the excuse of hunting.

Just two winters earlier, he and his father had spent many a day hunting.
They often joked about days like this, when they’d been too miserable with
cold to continue, but had forged ahead, fueled by the need to outdo one
another.

Alone with only the sound of the wind whistling through the branches or
an occasional howl, of a lone wolf, Evander could not pretend his favorite
sport of hunting brought any sort of enjoyment.

No. These days it was an escape from having to witness the sadness in his
mother’s eyes and the silent burden in his father’s.
Men’s voices broke the silence of the surroundings and Evander stopped
and listened.

Whoever the people were spoke and he slowly trekked toward the sound
of the voices. If it was villagers hunting, they’d not sought permission.
He’d been the one to sit in for his father in the last month, and that he
recalled no one had come with a request to hunt.

His father had always demanded to know who hunted in the forest and most would be granted their requests, as Evander’s family did not wish for
the people to go hungry. However, there were those who were greedy and
hunted more often than permitted.
