Hannah walked fast as the sun receded. She was late. She envied them for
not having to rush home. Eddie, Jack, and Eric didn’t have to worry
about getting the shit beat out of them.
She hated Wayne. It was as simple as that. He was a mean, vindictive
asshole who took out his shortcomings on the step-daughter he got stuck
with. Hannah’s mother had died a few years before and had left her with
him. He had fed her and clothed her, but he had also disciplined her.
Without mercy.
Fairway Homes was just through the trees. She had to cross Route 88 to
get to it, but she was close. She would be home before the sun went down,
and if Wayne wasn’t too drunk, then maybe—
Maybe nothing. She wouldn’t know anything until she walked through
the door.
She felt sweat rolling down her forehead as she picked up the pace. The
sooner she got home, the better.
Hannah hated how close she always cut it. It always caused her stress,
but she found it nearly impossible to walk away from her friends and the
tabletop games they played. They were her escape, the only one that
entirely took her away from her life. She liked to read, but it wasn’t the
same. For a couple of hours a day, she got to be the hero of her own story.
That hero never walked away with bruises without leaving the other guy
in worse shape.
She was almost out of the woods when she suddenly stopped, frozen.
She felt goosebumps all over, as if it were still winter. Only it was May, and
the heat was nearly sweltering. The Earth was dying, baking everyone along
with it.
Something was wrong.
She could hear a dull pounding from above, but the trees hid the sky.
Her eardrums hurt just listening to it. She stood less than five yards from
the tree line, could even see the road, and the only thing louder than the
thumping from above was the beating of her heart.
Her heart started pounding harder when she heard something behind
her. She turned, afraid to even breathe. Somewhere to the south, branches
cracked and broke. The sound cut through the evening as it rushed toward
her, getting closer. For a moment, she thought it must be something huge
coming at her, but then she realized that wasn’t right.
A squirrel darted past her foot, paying her no mind. It ran so close to her
that she could have reached out and touched it. A chipmunk followed,
closer to the road, then she spotted a raccoon and two more squirrels. Then
a group of deer charged through the tree line, crossing the path and entering
the trees on the other side. A frantic flock of birds flew overhead. A small,
black squirrel was crushed under the hoof of a deer as it ran. The noise was
deafening as the wildlife north of Rappahanok Falls fled from some unseen
danger.
Hannah had to step out of the way of two different deer, accidentally
kicking a chipmunk at one point. She didn’t know how long it went on, but
it scared her.
