An erratic gasp escapes my lips as my eyes slingshot open. Covers jolt in
every which way and my leg shoots straight for the heavens, giving me the
momentum I need to hurl myself from the bed.
It was him again.
I rub my eyes trying to rid them of the recurring nonsense of a dream I’ve
been having since… well, as long as I can remember. My aunt claims they’re
nightmares, but they’re far from scary. Just awkward and unnerving, but the
moment I wake up, it always feels like someone’s snapped my soul back into
my body. What I wouldn’t give to just open my eyes to the sun beaming
through the window like a normal person. Wouldn’t that be nice…
Cautiously, I rise to my feet and stumble toward the bathroom, gathering
the nerve to look at my reflection in the mirror. My shirt is drenched in cold
sweat and clings to every curve of my torso, and my rogue red curls are
tangled in knots, making me appear homeless. Dark circles make my blue
eyes look hollow, empty, like something has sucked every drop of energy
from my being.
I strip and climb into the shower, letting the hot water wash away the
evidence that I slept like shit, but my mind goes back to the dream. It’s
always the same, yet last night was different… altered.
Night after night, a man and I stand on a patio to some old cabin in the
woods. My spine tingles with the suspicion that more eyes are watching me,
peeling back the layers of my courage, but I only ever see his. The sky’s
moonless, lit by nothing but a single yellow bulb by the back door, and I can
never make out much beyond there being a wall of trees in the distance,
surrounding us.
