PAISLEY
Nothing good can come from stripping naked in a forest, Paisley.
The thought doesn’t stop me from shrugging out of my rain
jacket, tossing it to the ground, and reaching for the hem of my pullover.
I’m not in a city where walking down the street in a tank top would attract
leers from creepy men who love to pass their time wolf-whistling any woman
under fifty. This is the Utah mountains, where the only things I have to worry
about are hungry bears, red ants biting my ankles, and the wolf howls that
wake me in the night.
Here, I’m safe.
My reflection flickers across the still surface of the blue-green water.
A dark-haired woman wearing a thick navy sweater and skinny blue
jeans, with bangs nearly covering her big gray eyes, stares back. Maybe the
eyes aren’t too big. It’s just that the rest of her—or me—is small. Petite.
The perfect size for everyone to barge into on the streets. Twenty-two,
and I feel like I’ve already lived an entire lifetime of being ignored and
knocked around.
Invisible.
It feels like the only one who ever saw me was Mom…until a drunk
driving too fast to look where he was going, too fast to see Mom, stole her
from me.
But to everyone else, the people on the street who never seem to see me,
and the dad who decided I wasn’t worth sticking around for, I don’t exist.
“What are you even doing here if you hate him so much?” I whisper.
I’ve had plenty of time to think it over. During the nearly two-day
journey from Salt Lake City to this remote spot high in the Utah mountains,
where Mom wrote in her diary that she’d met Dad, I thought of little else.
The answer for having traveled so far is always the same. I have
questions, and he’s the only person in the world who can answer them. So
many that I wrote some of them down on a piece of paper, even though I
probably shouldn’t have. If anyone were to go through my backpack, they’d
think I was as crazy as I’m starting to believe I am.
