CLEMENTINE
Blue lights surrounded me, even though the room was dark. Muffled
sounds both engulfed and buried me in the hustle of the moment. People
spoke to me but I didn’t listen. I didn’t even pretend to listen. Not like I used
to. Not when the only thing I could think, to hope was, I’m free.
Hope was something I hadn’t clung to in a long, long while. Freedom.
That was something I’d never thought I’d see the possibility of again. But as I
sat there, huddled up in the carpeted corner of my husband’s bedroom
surrounded by lights and cops and noises, I dared that hope.
My husband was dead.
My captor. My tormentor. My demon. He was gone. And I could suddenly
breathe again. Ragged, labored, uneven breaths, but breath nonetheless.
I never thought, never dreamed of this happening in a hundred years. Not
in a million. But it was true, he was gone. In the most sudden way possible,
he was gone and done with. A man so big in my eyes, so daunting, that he’d
stolen the very breath from my lungs and the very hope from my soul.
“Clementine.”
My name registered in my ears like a shot to the head. I jerked upon
hearing it, rearing violently back to the present. To reality.
I was sitting on the floor of my husband’s room in his Seaside estate in
nothing but a nightgown.
And that husband, monster that he was, was lying
dead in his bed. The bed I had been making my way to on-time and ready like
I always did. Like I’d always been ordered to do. But this time was different.
Usually, even though Ron was old and evil and mean, when I arrived at
his door at exactly midnight, he was ready for me.
Waiting for me.
I would expect nothing less for his favorite obedient pet.
This time, when I knocked on his door the allotted two times I had learned
were the most agreeable to him, I didn’t hear the grumble of his weathered
voice telling me to come in. I waited, then contemplated leaving after I
knocked again.
Two delicate wraps, just as he liked, but still he hadn’t
answered. Even though I assumed he could have fallen asleep, a rare
occurrence but not impossible, assuming had gotten me in trouble before.
So instead, I turned the gold foil knob leading to my least favorite room in
the entire house. When I did, I stepped in and was assaulted by a foul smell I
had never smelled before. Coppery, thick, and pungent. I wanted to gag, and
to leave.
But prior conditioning forced me to step further into the room.
Long, dark curtains spilled from the tops of the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Windows which were open and pouring in moonlight from the sea facing
landscape beyond. It was hard to see the beach in the darkness of midnight,
but I heard the rolling waves clearly. We were that close. They seemed to
crash and land much more violently than usual.
They seemed to be warning me.
The room was big. Big enough that the rest of the furniture, all dark
mahogany and old ancestral wood, was pushed up against the walls, not
visible in the night dark shadows of the room. The bed was the only thing
visible in the moonlight.
The bed, and what was on the bed.
