Everything was almost loaded in the boat, not that we needed much. Just
our weapons, and food and water for when we came back. All that
swimming made us ravenous. We usually kept the boat docked at a house we
had on one of the small islands in the Bahamas. The house was small, but we
really only needed it for when we went to Sulamer.
“Pizza should be here soon, you guys,” Jem said.
“Go ahead and eat, I’ll finish getting everything set up.” I looked around
with my hands on my hips before I pushed the box containing our weapons to
the right about three inches.
“Dude, there’s nothing left to set up.”
I glared at Ledger over my shoulder. He just stood with his arms crossed
and a knowing smirk on his face. Rook and Jem hadn’t left either.
“I need to make sure—”
“You already checked everything this morning. When you ran out of the
house as soon as you woke up,” Rook said.
When you ran away from Lyss. All three guys stared me down, the words
unsaid, but mentally thrown.
“I warned her it could only be one night.” I sighed and leaned against the
edge of the boat, looking across the water.
“That’s why Lyss ran upstairs in tears this afternoon?” Rook asked.
I sighed and hung my head. Rook had my back, all the guys did. They
stood by me whatever I decided to do, no matter how stupid. We’re a team.
All for something or whatever that human saying is. Nothing had ever come
between us. Except Lyss. But she wasn’t coming between us, she was filling
in the gaps. And I fucked up.
I turned around to face them and straightened my shoulders. “I told her I
didn’t want to lose her.”
“And?” Ledger drug out the word.
I glared at him again. He’s lucky I loved him like a brother. The guy
could be annoying as hell.
“That she could stay here and I’d sneak away when I could to spend time
with her.”
It was silent while they stared at me in disbelief. Jem took three steps to
close the distance between us and punched me in the jaw.
“What the fuck?” I asked in disbelief after my vision cleared. Jem had
never hit me before, even when we sparred. Who knew my cousin had a right
hook that solid?
Rook and Ledger were between us immediately. Ledger was already
pushing Jem towards the dock and Rook stood ready to grab me if I felt the
need to retaliate.
“You asked her to be your whore!” Jem’s face was turning red as he
yelled at me. I’d seen him mad before, plenty of times, but he usually had
better control of himself.
“That’s not—”
“Whore is a bit of a strong word,” Ledger said.
“Thank you.” I touched my jaw tenderly and winced. Jem had a good
right hook on him.
