Kaos
“You lead the way, Kalesh,” I shouted to my leader as we huddled in
the dank passageway, shadows snaking long fingers toward the
group of females waiting to escape from the battle arena complex.
Even though the air was cool in the subterranean passageways, my skin
sizzled with heat and my chest heaved. Alarms shrieked overhead and heavy
footsteps approached, telling me it was time to take our chance and run for
the sky ship. “I’ll bring up the rear.”

Usually, Kalesh Naz would insist on bringing up the rear of the group and be
the last to escape—just as he’d done when our sky ship was attacked by the
Xulonians—but I knew he wanted to stay with the pink-haired female he
called Tyrria. He’d clearly formed a bond with her, and he did not argue with
me when I offered to be the last in the group.

As Naz’s first officer who’d been serving under him across many galaxies
and as many decades, I knew his mind almost as well as I knew my own. He
could not leave his mate, but he felt responsible to ensure the safety of the
female captives we’d liberated. If he was leading this mission with anyone
else, he would not have agreed so easily, but my kalesh trusted me with his
life, and knew I would value the lives of the females we were saving as
dearly as my own.

I hitched in a breath to steady my racing heart, but my breaths escaped in
pants and my flesh burned as I followed Naz and the women through another
dark corridor, this one with a ceiling so low that my curved horns brushed the
stone. Did my kalesh know how powerfully the Quaibyn was wracking my
body? He must suspect that I was afflicted by the Taori curse, but we’d been
too busy escaping from the dungeon and then freeing the females to discuss
the state of my fever.

“I am the master of my being and the author of my fate,” I said in a low
voice, and through clenched teeth. The words were only for me, and I was
grateful the females around me were too distracted to notice my mumblings.
I could not let my base desires alter my ability to fight like an honorable
Taori warrior. I was a member of one of the strongest and most valiant
warrior species in the universe.
