THE WITCH IN 43B
Seattle 2132
The air inside of the witch’s kitchen was dank, thick with humidity and
the heavy scent of herbs bubbling away in the massive cauldron stung
my nose. The heavy iron cauldron hung over the coals on creaking
chains pinned to an arch of stones that was the main support for the roof.
This area was the key to my plan today. I needed it to work and I just had to
get my timing right and somehow get over the pile of glowing coals under
the cauldron.
Waves of heat baked off the hot metal and clutched at my attention,
dragging me down into drowsiness. It made me glad I’d tied my long hair
back. Even so, the heavy strands stuck to the sweat on the back of my neck.
I rubbed at my eyes and told myself to stay focused on the plan. Today I
was going to get this witch to make a deal.
I moved into the back of the kitchen, ducking under a mesh bag of
apples, dried into wrinkled stones. Plants filled the space above me, riotous
green vines snaking low and brushing against my cheek. Instead of
something normal like wood flooring or vinyl plank, the floor was packed
earth. The low ceiling in this ancient building looked ready to collapse any
minute now, but I wasn’t going to hunch over–I wasn’t going to telegraph
my plan to the witch in 43B.
Laila the Enchantress stood with her back to me, turning her critical eye
to the clothing I’d given her. At barely five foot tall, she was more than a
head shorter than me. Like all in her coven, she wore rich blue robes that
almost swept the floor.
When she held out my dark leather duster, the hem of the garment
trailed on the packed dirt floor. When I’d tried it on it had fallen past my
knees. As tall as I was, it was the closest thing I would find to full body
protection if I could convince Laila to enchant it for me.
I’d expected someone older. Enchanting items was a rare specialty. But
Laila was no crone. Her lively hazel eyes sparkled against her dark skin.
Her long hair was shiny and black as a raven’s wing. The almost tropical
humidity of this kitchen made me sweaty while the witch glowed with
vitality.
The fragrant steam pricked at my eyes and I resisted the urge to rub at
them. I’d scoped out Laila’s place last week and I had liked what I’d seen.
If I could make this work, we would both benefit. Laila sighed and rubbed
the leather between her fingers.
I tapped my foot. “What?”
