Jacey
Where in the world is Hollie Berry?” The newscaster’s voice rings out
through the open space of my living room. I stare at the blonde on
the screen and wonder why a movie star is making top of the hour
news with all the other shit going on in the world. Like she can hear my
thoughts, Haley, my best friend, snorts loudly into her overly full wine
glass. Her head turns to me from her spot next to me on the overstuffed
sofa.

“Don’t they have people who can find her? Like that one time those
guys found that dude?” she asks, and I already know where she’s going
with this.

“They aren’t going to send Seal Team Six out for a ‘missing’ movie
star.” I emphasize the missing portion of the sentence with air quotes.
“Maybe she just needed a break. Can’t say that I blame her. I could use a
few weeks of going missing or a coma. I’m really not picky at this point.” I
sigh, leaning my head against the back cushion. My eyes close momentarily
as my blonde hair falls over the back of the couch.

“Hey, you are getting a break. You have your office Christmas party
tomorrow night, and then a full week with your family at Mt. Baker with
Josh.” I pop a single eye open and stare at her.
“That is not a vacation, Hales. That is an interruption to my
regularly scheduled anxiety for a feature presentation of holiday anxiety.
Christmas with my family is like having a root canal and a Pap smear on the
same day. If you throw in a visit to the DMV and the post office then you
have hit the jackpot and get to spend a whole week with them.” I groan
loudly.

“My gosh, your level of jolliness is reaching nuclear levels, you
better be careful or you’re going to have tinsel coming out of places you
don’t want it.”
Don’t remind me, I’m still recovering from all my Thanksgiving
cheer,” I retort, waving an imaginary flag.
“Live a little, babe. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying
yourself…just a little. You don’t have to be so uptight all the time, Jace,”
she says, and I start to correct her, but she holds a hand up, halting me from
arguing.

“I don’t mean uptight like the Trunchbull. I mean uptight like
Meryl in The Devil Wears Prada. You know she’d be a damn good time if
she just let her hair down a little.” She knocks my shoulder with hers. “Let
your hair down, make some memories and mistakes. You’re only young
once.” Haley smiles at me, and I smile back while bringing my wine glass
up to my lips.
