Hannah
Bright sunlight filtered through the tall gray buildings surrounding downtown
Atlanta’s central park. All around me I could hear the sounds of the city
echoing off each concrete wall as I walked past the bright red benches and
towering magnolia trees that surrounded the park interior.

A few homeless men and women lounged under the shade of the trees
trying to escape what sun the buildings didn’t block, but it wouldn’t have
mattered. It was mid-June in the south and even the mosquitoes would be
sweating like a whore in church.

I paused at a crosswalk and stared at the large square building in front of
me. The Fulton County Courthouse was built in the early 1900s. It was hard
to imagine that the “golden age” that brought about art deco, flappers, and
speakeasies built something so big, square, and ugly. At least that’s what
others said. But not me, I loved this courthouse and everything it represented.

When I’d first moved to Atlanta to take a job as a federal agent, I had felt like
a small fish in a big pond. It was completely different from my slow as
molasses country home just a couple of hours outside of the city. Atlanta was
bright lights, loud music, and modern gleaming buildings. But I quickly
found a love for the city’s people and rich history. It also helped that my
sister had moved here for college, so that family was always close by.

Moving up the stairs I pulled one of the heavy double doors open and
stepped inside the cool interior, taking a deep breath to calm my nerves.
Today’s preliminary hearing was important. Our agency had been working on
this case for almost three years and we were finally close to putting the last
remaining pieces into place to take down a huge human trafficking operation.
All that needed to happen was for this informant to give his testimony. Then
one by one all the cards to the Hildago Syndicate would begin to fall.
“Special Agent Kelly.”

A deep voice called my name just as I was finishing up with the security
checkpoint, returning my badge and items to my purse. I immediately
recognized Special Agent David Williams, head of the Atlanta field office.
David had been my partner before his promotion and I still looked at him like
a mentor and friend. He was a big man with dark skin and an easy-going
smile. But you didn’t want to get on his bad side or else you risked 6ft 5 of
ex-UGA linebacker barreling down on you. The only person I’d ever seen
David back down from was his wife Marie, and thankfully, she was a friend
too.
