His expression was contorted into one of unrelenting pain, eyes rolled
back as his mouth opened wide in a silent scream.
My breath caught as I blinked… and his face returned to normal.
He laughed, the sound bright and playful. “Come on, Eliana! You can do
better than that!”
My face was red from the effort of gripping the handle of the short sword,
refusing to let it drop. It was a difficult feat for my young, untrained arms,
and my scrawny muscles screamed in protest.
“I am trying!” I insisted, refusing to let fall the tears that pricked at the
corner of my eyes.

The edges of his mouth kicked up in an amused smirk; the gravel
crunched under his feet as he stepped closer to me, swiping hair out of his
eyes. “You’re clearly not trying hard enough, little doe.”
With heavy arms, I swung the sword out in front of me, groaning as he
jumped out of the way, laughing once more.

“It’s a good thing that’s blunt, or you would have torn my shirt!”
“You don’t fight fair!” I bared my teeth at him.
He pointed his sword at me with one hand, making it look as easy as
holding a twig. “Ah-ah. Stop that.”
My jaw clenched shut. I pouted.

Bright green eyes scanned the arena, checking if anyone was nearby.
“An enemy would not fight fair, little sister, so you must not fight fair. You
must look for any opportunity, or moment of distraction, to strike.

Remember, little doe… you do not break.”
I nodded as my hands dropped, the relief in my arms instant. I dumped
the training sword by my feet, huffing out my frustration. “Isn’t there
something else I can try? Like a dagger?” His own ornate dagger, strapped
to his thigh, drew my eyes.

He stabbed the end of his blade into the soft ground then knelt beside me,
reaching to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear with a smile. “Once you
learn to master a sword, I’ll teach you how to use a dagger in close
combat.”

My lips stretched into a grin. “You promise?”
He nodded. “Maybe Father will let me get you a blade of your own.”
I jumped up and down on the spot before throwing my arms around his
neck. “You’re the best brother ever! Thanks, Morgwn!”
His laugh tickled my shoulder. “No worries, little doe. Now, go clean up
before dinner. Or Mother will have both our heads.”

I kissed his rough cheek quickly before running back to the palace,
ducking under a maid’s arms as she exited with the freshly cleaned laundry.
Excitement swelled in my chest as I ran to my room. I couldn’t wait to fight
with a dagger just like my brother’s.

I entered my room, the door slamming shut behind me, and my smile fell.
There was someone in here.
A foul smell reached my nostrils. I spun around, and someone knocked
me from my feet. My back hit the floor, winding me.
Not someone. Two strange men
