Voula pulled into the underground parking garage and slid right into
her rented slot. Her compact car was perfect for tight spots. Parking in
Manhattan was a precious commodity and worth every penny, even though
she only used her car when she needed to leave the city.

She turned off the engine and sat, unwinding. She breathed deeply,
stuffed from yet another engagement party where swirls of girls asked her
multiple times when she’d settle down. Did they even know her? Settling
down was a laugh. She had her residency to finish, establish herself at a
hospital as an oncologist, and then she’d think about it. Wait. Did that mean
she’d have to choose one man? She opened her door, stepped out, slammed
it shut, and walked to the elevator.

Riding the elevator up, she debated knocking on her best friend
Stacey’s door, but left her and her husband, Steve, alone. Stacey, five
months pregnant, was probably sleeping by now. Voula, the chosen
godmother, was honored to accept the role. Godmother would be good
practice for when she had her own child, she figured. Yes, she wanted a kid,
but was hesitant about committing to one man. The idea was like a thorn,
one prickly thorn, stuck in her skin.

Voula strolled into her apartment, kicked off her high heels, still in her
colorful mini dress, washed her hands, and filled the kettle for tea. Turning
on her new stove, the click click of the gas sounded, yet no flame followed.
What the hell? This is a new stove. The stove she bought, in the co-op she
bought, with a little, okay a lot of, help from her proud parents whose faces
shined whenever they said their daughter was a doctor. Her dad, the son of
immigrants, never finished high school because of so many reasons. She
watched him literally break his back working in the family pizza parlor for
years. While they made quite a bit of money and even opened a coffee shop
too, she vowed she’d make enough money for them to retire early, or to at
least hire more help.

She turned the knob once more. Click, click and still no flame. She
tried all the knobs. Should I call the super? The concierge? She’d deal with
it in the morning, thinking it would magically fix itself overnight. With a
day off, she planned to spend her morning in bed with a good book and then
a movie. She was exhausted. And she loved it that way. She placed a tea
bag in a mug with water and microwaved it.

The next morning required coffee. She opened the blinds and winced,
shutting her eyes against the glare of the morning sun. Separating the
canisters into bold and medium blends, she settled on a New Orleans flavor,
which she had picked up on a last-minute weekend away. That was Voula,
striking when an impulse hit. The chicory scent filled her galley kitchen.
