“HI, ADAM!”
“Adam, wait up—”
“Got a minute, baby?”
A half dozen more voices joined those, all vying for the attention of the
newest celebrity guest at Moongate Island’s Stein Luxury Resorts. Adam
Njord regretted his impulsive decision to winter on the island after taking
home the top prize at the North Shore Shifter Challenger Surf Series in
Hawaii that summer. Almost as much as he regretted accepting his father’s
proclamation that he would be the next King of the Deep.
He’d needed a break, that much was certain, but no mountain retreat or
city getaway would do. Having complete, unrestricted access to the briny
blue was the only way his mother would allow his leaving home during the
holiday season. She was right to worry, he hated to admit, but Adam did get
cranky if landlocked for more than a few hours. Most of his kind did.
He paused as the cacophony of voices grew. His chest swelled, body
arching, his posture reacting to this threat to his peace of mind as it would
were he in the wild. Only by the sheer force of his will, did Adam manage to
stop the several rows of fangs that tried to descend from his gums.
Great White Shark Shifters were not known for their patience. Fiercely
aggressive in nature, Great Whites were the perfect killing machine, best
known for inspiring monsters in horror flicks, which of course, had made his
wild cousins the most hunted species in the world.
True, Steven Spielberg had done them a rather bad turn in his iconic film,
even if it did remain one of Adam’s secret favorites. The real truth, of course,
was that Great Whites were solitary creatures. Great White Shifters too. They
had no Packs or Prides and kept to small family groups, but even that was
rare. They were, all of them, very dominant and highly skilled hunters.
Of course, his childhood was not exactly typical. His human mother had
mated his father before she’d known any of the facts about their kind, and yet
somehow, the curvy and petite female had reeled in Hai Njord’s wild heart.
The two had been together for thirty-seven years.
Their love had produced plenty of strange whispers and looks from the
other Shifters in the small Norwegian village where he’d been born and
where most of his immediate family still lived. The Njords were considered
royalty among their kind, which was the only reason they had not been run
out of their still very superstitious village.
Unlike other Shark Shifters who maybe birthed one healthy pup as a
couple then moved on to the next whenever the mating fever struck, the
Njords had eight children together.
All Sharks.
All males.
All as aggressive and hulking as Adam.
At seven-feet two inches tall, and almost three hundred pounds of rock
hard muscle, Adam was used to people staring. But it was not the staring that
bothered him. It was the constant attempts to gain his attention as he walked
out of the surf, board in hand, after he’d just finished a particularly satisfying
set.
