SELENA
The meeting with the McIntyres was good. They want us to work with
their grocery stores for all the holidays next year.”
“Good. I love McIntyre’s Food Markets. You can get anything you need
without going to three different grocery stores,” LaShae, my friend and
business partner, said.
“I’m excited to have the largest Black-owned grocery store on our client
list. I will have Jesse work on the contracts and send them to the legal team.
We should have them locked in by fall.”
“That’s great news. Of course with that new contract will come at least
one new hire,” LaShae explained.
“Yes, I know. We will work on that at the beginning of the year.”
“Where are you?”
“Since I was next door at McIntyre’s corporate offices, I came to the
grocery store to get what we needed for our girls’ night. I made the mistake
of coming in here hungry, so I’ve got a cart full of stuff I wasn’t planning on
getting.”
“Like what?” LaShae asked.
“Rotisserie chicken…”
“Oh, their rotisserie chickens are the best.”
“Also, a slice of the mushroom truffle pizza.”
“What an amazing combination. That’s my favorite one.”
“I know, right? Then I have some chocolate chip cookies….”
“With the extra chocolate chunks?”
“You must be hungry too.”
“I am!”
We both laughed.
“Are we doing a charcuterie tray like adults or should I just grab a bunch
of snacks, wine, and liquor?”
“You know I am going to say the latter,” LaShae said with a chuckle.
“Are you going to make our favorite drink?”
“The strawberry dreamsicle? Yes, I just have to find the strawberry
schnapps,” LaShae answered.
“I have plenty of vodka, so you don’t have to worry about buying that.”
“Cool.”
“It feels like it’s been so long since we’ve had a girls’ night in.”
“That’s because you’ve been so busy keeping secrets,” LaShae griped.
“Girl, shut up! Did you want me to tell you everything Cole had planned
and spoil the surprise?”
My older brother Cole had proposed to LaShae on Valentine’s Day. He’d
surprised her by sending her on a scavenger hunt I’d helped him organize. I
had also done an outstanding job of keeping it a secret from Shae. She found
out I knew and had held it against me ever since. I’d introduced Cole and
LaShae. She was my friend before she was Cole’s girlfriend. After their first
meeting, Cole and LaShae told me they were interested in each other. I gave
them my blessing, which they didn’t need, but it was cool of them to come to
me first.
“I’m just saying. You say we are best friends. As best friends, we tell
each other…” LaShae began.
“I will not tell you where he’s taking you for the honeymoon, so stop
trying to guilt me into spilling the beans!” I interrupted.
“Just a hint, Lena,” Shae begged.
“No, lil girl! I’m not telling you.”
