I have never given much thought to what I might do with my life if
the choice was entirely my own. Where I might go, who I might meet, the
woman I would like to become.
It seems useless to imagine a life separate from my mother when the
last twenty years, it has always been me and her. Two wild woman making
the open road our home. She, wise navigator, charting our course through the
country, and me, trusted sidekick with never a word of disagreement.
I have followed her blindly my entire life. But now, my path is
unclear.
My mother was taken by a strange man that left no ransom note and
no indication he plans on giving her back. If my mother is the sun, I am the
Earth that clings to her orbit in order to survive. Without her, chaos ensues.
Now, all that remains of her is my memory and the suitcase filled to
the brim with the only possessions to her name.
I’m in Lewiston, Maine at the end of summer. We arrived here one
week ago with plans to stay the night in a dingy motel and drive on to the
west coast first thing in the morning. She would go to the bank, I would stop
in at the craft store I was desperate to pick up supplies in and then we’d meet
for breakfast before Lewiston faded to nothing in the rear view mirror.
What’s that saying about making plans and the big man in the sky
laughing? Well, if that’s true, laugh it up buddy. What was meant to be a
short trip, has turned into a longer stay with no end date in sight.
The thing no one tells you about growing up is that sometimes all the
parts of life that sparkled with an adolescent glow, slowly dim and fade away
as you become an adult. When suddenly you’re expected to be responsible
and never make mistakes.
But I have made a grave mistake that led to losing my mother. We
have each other’s backs living out on the road. Except today, I didn’t have
hers.
