THEO
âJanie had her baby, sign this,â my executive assistant, Katrina, orders,
shoving a piece of paper into my face within three seconds of me walking
into my office.
âCan I sit first?â I ask before taking a sip of the to-go coffee I grabbed
on my way to work this morning.
She shakes her head, one hand on her hip as she glares at me.
âNo. Sign it. Youâre already late.â
I shrug off my jacket, which barely keeps the East Coast February chill
at bay despite the thick wool, and hang it on the coat rack before putting my
briefcase on the chair beside the door. When I turn back to face Katrina, her
arms are now crossed on her chest and her face is pinched to show irritation
I know she doesnât actually mean. Sheâs tapping the toe of her black, patent
leather heels and glaring at me.
âI wasnât late; I had a breakfast meeting with an artist,â I inform her as
if she doesnât already know this. She just rolls her big brown eyes, liberally
flecked with gold.
I donât normally notice that kind of thing, the undertones in the eyes of
the women I work with, but Iâm with Katrina Delgado more than Iâm alone.
You tend to notice the tiniest things when you spend that much time with
anyone.
âAnd now,â she says, her signature sass laced in each word. âWe have
eighteen million things to do to catch up.â
âI always find it so interesting how you say we as if youâre going to
execute any of these tasks we have to do,â I say as I sit down, knowing her
response will be entertaining.
She doesnât disappoint.
âAre you fucking joking me?â
Katrina has been working for me for nearly a year, and it only took two
weeks for her cordial professionalism to wear off and for what I assume is
the real version of her to break through. Polite requests turned into mouthy
demands; sweet smiles morphed into her poking fun at me.
Iâve never had an assistant like Katrina, and I mean that in all the best
ways possible.
While it took her little to no time to get accustomed to me, it took me
about a month to start poking her back, finding the buttons that would make
her nose flare or her eyes roll just for a bit of entertainment in my long,
boring days.
Itâs a strange working relationship we have, but it works all the same.
I smile and shrug at her. âIâm just saying, you always come to me with
all of these tasks, giving me shit about deadlines and due dates, but whoâs
the one actually doing the work?â She stares at me with venom in her eyes,
and I wonder if this is the moment she snaps.
The moment I take it too far, when she realizes I am way too much
work and she doesnât get paid nearly enough to deal with me, despite her
healthy salary.
