Naomi
Dabbing her neck, Naomi Demos leaned against the frame of her
window and grinned. The soothing view from her bedroom never got
old. Bright September sun kissed the roofs and open terraces of the
Plaka neighborhood of Athens, giving the endless ochre and red tiles a
vibrant hue made even more breath-taking by the deep cerulean blue
of the sky.
She tugged at the collar of her gray shirt damped with
perspiration. Even at this time of year, the noon heat was high enough
to make her uncomfortable.
After a second of hesitation, she resisted grabbing her smartphone
from her back pocket. Recording the view the old-fashioned way—with
her eyes and heart—felt better.
The old lady’s balcony opposite, overflowed with aromatic herbs,
their scent carried over by a warm breeze; the blue chairs and rusty
table on the rooftop above, where a young couple spent their evenings
arguing before making out in the open; rows of laundry lines draped
with floating snow-white linens.
Closing her eyes, she let her other senses take over, picking up the
hints of daily Athenian life.
Bursts of laughter, angry shouts, tobacco, fresh coffee, screeching
tires and loud car honks. All of them so usual, she had long stopped
noticing them. All of them, soon to be replaced by another range of
perfumes and sounds that had been familiar, too, once upon a time.
Naomi shook her head. Not even gone, and already nostalgic.
Funny how it was that when you were about to lose something, its true
meaning hit you. The coming months needed to be busy if she hoped
to keep homesickness at bay.
Ironic, then, that she was going home.
Her smile turned into a grimace. According to her cousin Keiko
and her aunt Sawa, days off in Tokyo would remain as elusive as ever.
Her life wouldn’t change much compared to now.
Except that now, everything was different.
The universe had been turned upside down, inside out. After her
return to Athens, unflappable and steadfast Naomi had woken up with
her heart drumming wild, drenched in sweat, a scream stuck in her
throat. That had lasted a month or two, before it began to pass.
An extraordinary event, the distant yet comforting presence of her
lover in the back of her mind had been the only thing that helped her
keep her wits.
