I couldn’t believe it had been ten years.
I remembered my parents driving me away in their blue Cadillac, and I’d
twisted in my seat to watch from the window, as we left everything and
everyone I’d ever known behind. I recalled pressing my fingers to the glass
and squinting, trying to commit everything to memory.
Bluebell Falls looked the same way as it always did, with thick green
foliage stretching out as far as the eye could see and sprawling mountains
shrouded in a thin mist. With a smile, I let the truck come to a complete stop,
the engine idling beneath me.
I killed the engine, leaned over the dashboard, and squinted at the twostory Victorian house, with a blue wrap-around porch and a thick-haired dog
dozing out front. As soon as I pushed the door open, the shaggy-haired dog
stood to attention, narrowed his eyes at me, and barked. Holding both hands
up, I took a few steps forward and smiled at him.
Then his tail began to wag, thumping the door behind him.
“It’s good to see you too, Chance,”
