Thirteen years laterĀ
My pulse quickens as I look through the scope of my modified sniper
rifle. Lying on the roof of this high-rise building, I run through all the
variables involved in this hit.
Excitement vibrates through every fiber of my being. I need this one. I
compose myself as I prepare for whatās about to happen. Over the years, Iāve
honed my skills, perfecting them for this very moment.
I look through the scope and see my target approaching, three miles out. I
take several deep breaths to calm myself. I canāt get this wrong because itās
too personal to fail.
I open my eyes and steady my finger over the trigger. So many things can
go wrong, but Iāve been doing this for years and Iām prepared for every
possible outcome. I insert my Bluetooth earpiece, dial my phone, and watch
as the target speeds toward me.
He becomes crystal clear through my scope, as if heās right in front of me.
āWhat?ā Ronan answers as he sits in the back seat and casually turns to look
out the window.
āYou wonāt escape me, Ronan.ā
Sheer terror washes over him. āTurn the car around!ā he yells at his driver.
I smirk as I watch him scuttle toward the middle of the back seat in an
attempt to duck for cover. āThat wonāt save you.ā I depress the trigger and
hear the lovely sound of the bullet scraping through the chamber. Part of me
is worried Iām off on my calculations, but when I see the bullet break the
glass of the car and Ronanās head explode toward the rear window, I know
Iāve annihilated my target. āI love you, Dad,ā I whisper. Iāve now taken my
vengeance for my fatherās death.
Iāve carried the burden of Ronan Murphy for thirteen years. Iāve felt
nothing but hatred and venom for him, but heās been in hiding for many
years. I lower my head to the ground as an overwhelming warmth radiates
through my body. Iāve wanted this for so long, and now that itās all over, it
feels almost surreal. I did it. I finally ended the life of the man who ordered
my father killed and changed the trajectory of my life forever.
I lay on the rooftop for what feels like hours, watching the aftermath of my
kill and allowing the euphoric sensation of revenge to sweep over me. Today
is the best day of my life. Not only is it my twenty-eighth birthday, but I
finally killed Ronan Murphy. My phone dings and I touch the earpiece.
āYeah.ā
āHow did that feel?ā Agent asks.
I roll onto my back and stare up at the crystal-clear sky. Smiling, I relax
my hands on my stomach. āIām kind of lost for words,ā I say.
āYou? The great 15, lost for words? In all the years Iāve worked for you,
Iāve never known you to be lost for words,ā Agent playfully mocks me. āI bet
it felt good though. Tell me it felt good, right?ā
