***LOUISA***
Louisa stood in the middle of the foyer, the smile on her face slowly
fading as the front door closed behind the last guest. She then let out a
long sigh of relief before turning to look at Darby, standing behind the
reception desk. After being fully booked for the entire summer, the strain of
the heavy workload was beginning to show, and she was glad that they’d all
listened to Jolene about taking a week off before the rush of fall customers
began.
“Well, we’re free for a few days,” she said, walking over to Darby. “I
don’t know about you, but I’m going to stay in bed until noon every day. I
feel like I could sleep for a week straight.”
“I’m just looking forward to a few days without someone complaining to
me,” Darby said. “We’ve been open for three years, and I still can’t believe
some of the reasons people find to complain. Last week I had a woman
demanding we discount her room because the birds were too loud in the
morning, and the week before that, it was complaints about the weather.”
“Well, I can top that one,” Jolene said. “I had a woman call me to her
room last week because the towels were hung the wrong way.”
“All I know is that I’m going to be glad to be on the other side of the desk
for a week,” Darby said. “Jolene, are you sure you won’t change your mind
and go with us?”
“As much as I hate to miss all the fun, the beach isn’t exactly my comfort
zone,” Jolene said, holding out her arm. “Even with sunscreen, I’d be burned
to a crisp by the end of the first day. Don’t worry about me, I have my week
all planned out. I won’t be sitting around the house doing nothing while
you’re gone.”
“Well, if you’re sure, then I guess I’d better go make sure Erin and
Shelby are packed,” Darby said. “Our flight leaves Nashville tonight, so we
need to be on the road in a couple of hours.”
“I’ve got a couple of things to finish up in my office,” she said. “Let me
know when you’re ready to leave.”
“I’ll be in the kitchen with Yvette; she’s got a new recipe she wants me to
try,” Jolene said with a grin. “I think she mentioned something about caramel
and chocolate.”
They all laughed, then went their separate ways, but when Louisa sat
down in her office, the paperwork didn’t seem as pressing, especially when
she thought about what was happening down in the kitchen. Eventually, her
sweet tooth won the battle, and she gave up, deciding that helping Yvette test
her new recipe was more important than the stacks of paper on her desk. A
little sugar would give her the inspiration to finish the boring task so she
could start her holiday, she told herself, pushing away from the desk and
getting to her feet.
