HALIE
“Okay, Jackson, remember what we talked about. No more putting gummy
bears up your nose. They go in your mouth, not your nose,” Halie told the
four-year-old again, for the third time in an hour.
She hoped the kid would remember his emergency-room visit and heed
her advice. Reaching into her pocket for her stack of stickers, she held them
out for the child to choose one. She’d never realized until working in the E.R.
and handing out stickers to kids that the decision was a big one. They always
seemed to take an absurd amount of time choosing.
Once he picked out a dinosaur sticker, he smiled at Halie and held it up to
show her. She smiled too, despite her exhaustion from working a twelve-hour
shift and her feet screaming at her for mercy. Handing the paperwork over to
Jackson’s parents, she shook their hands and excused herself, letting the
family know they were good to leave.
Walking to the locker room, Halie said goodnight to her coworkers,
avoiding as much small talk as possible. The only thing she wanted to do was
change her clothes and get out of there. She was ready for a drink and some
girl talk with her best friend. Stripping down to her underwear in the locker
room, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror and frowned. This was an
everyday occurrence when she was changing out of her work clothes. She
didn’t know why she always looked. She hated seeing the reflection since it
always made every one of her insecurities come flooding to the surface.
Grabbing her clothes, she dressed quickly so she could avoid picking herself
apart any more than she already had. Halie snagged her purse and slammed
the locker shut, sighing in exhaustion.
As soon as she exited through the employee door, a mist of rain hit her
face. It was more of a heavy drizzle, but she didn’t mind. Portland was
known for being a rainy city, and it often matched her mood. Pulling her
hood up to cover her long hair, she hustled as quickly as she could to her car
and then sent a text to Ava, her best friend, letting her know she was on her
way to the restaurant and would be there in fifteen minutes. Ava replied right
away with an Already here response. Halie was hoping her friend wasn’t
already drunk, but knowing Ava, she had probably already downed a few
drinks.
Halie’s mind replayed the day. She had always wanted to be a nurse, but
she had never planned on it being so stressful. Most days when she left the
hospital, she was grumpy and emotional. She could handle the job and most
of the patients, but she had never expected to really care about the patients
and worry about them once she’d clocked out. Working in a trauma hospital,
she had seen it all.
