The Bargain

As long as you wear this, the beast inside you will remain hidden.”
Eleven-year-old Ocevia Kallallis held the seashell necklace in
her trembling fingers as tears slipped down her cheek, the weight of it so
much more than her tiny mind could carry. The Sea Goddess, Miris, stood
before her, having only just made a bargain with her family, a bargain that
would take her away from them. Forever. It wasn’t Oceviaʼs fault. She
knew that. Even so, her true nature, the creature she became when she was
angry or scared, had become too much for her parents. Unable to handle the
destruction Ocevia created, her parents had summoned the Sea Goddess,
agreeing to things she wasn’t old enough to understand, no matter how
many times they repeated the conditions to her.

“Will I be able to see my mommy again? My daddy?” Her small voice
cracked, emotions flooding her like a wave about to crest. Although she
asked the question, she already knew the answer. The Sea Goddessʼ
enslaved mermaids were forbidden from visiting the human lands. Once she
left her kingdom of Thatia, she would never be able to return. She would

never see her family again. The dying hope threatened to shatter her
innocence, extinguishing her fire for life.
With her silver mermaid tail transformed into legs, the Sea Goddess
towered above the little girl, looking down at her with swirling quicksilver
eyes. Even when Miris tried to look kind, she was still intimidating, nothing
like Ocevia’s mother, who was all softness.

Miris touched the seashell on Oceviaʼs necklace, letting the object slide
through her long, elegant fingers. “My mermaids are not allowed to visit the
human lands, little fish. Unless your family dares a trip into the sea, you
will not be able to see them again, but do not cry. We will be your family.”
Ocevia didn’t want a new family. She wanted her mommy, daddy, and
baby sister, but she knew better than to argue with the Sea Goddess. Her
rules were not to be broken, and the last thing Ocevia wanted was more
punishment.

Nodding and wiping the tears from her cheek, the little girl turned toward
the Lamalis Sea, the place that would be her home for the rest of her life.
She shivered looking at the vastness of the sea darkened by an incoming
storm. Even with Miris beside her, she’d never felt so alone. She’d already
left her home high in the mountains with Miris that morning, and they’d
traveled for hours back to where the water met the land. There were no
more goodbyes to give. Her family was gone.
