CHANGE IS SCARY
Twenty-One Months Later
MID-JANUARY, Eve pulled her jacket on and walked the two blocks to
Fierce Brewery where her sister worked.
The cool crisp air was exactly what she needed while she shared the
news. Her giddiness was almost too much to contain, causing a pep in her
step.
When she made the move here almost two years ago, she thought she’d
be starting over in her career as a staff accountant in the office.
But a few months in, she’d been promoted to field auditor. Just what she
liked to do.
Now, she was promoted to principal. Her personal goal had been to get
here by age thirty. Normally you’d need around six years to get there and
she had less than two at this firm. But they were looking at all her
experience! Next step on the ladder was manager and then partner. Years for
that, but she was going to do it.
What she loved even more was her office was within walking distance

letting people in, and then continued on. The smell of the snack foods
offered at the bar off to the side was drawing her in too, but she kept
moving toward the employees-only door.
Most had keycards to get in a side entrance and bypass all of this. Not
her and she didn’t care. She was just happy that they knew her now and let
her go without the questions, the bartender normally buzzing the door open
for her.
When she was walking down the hall to the offices, she passed a few
with doors opened and waved, then turned into her sister’s office.
“Hi.”
“Hi, Eve. What are you doing here?” Hope asked, looking at the clock.
“It’s not lunchtime yet.”
And normally she at least let her sister know if she was coming over. “I
wanted to surprise you. I’ve got good news I need to share.”
“I can tell by your face. What is it?” Hope asked.
“I just got promoted to principal,” she all but squealed.
Hope jumped up and hugged her sister. “Good for you. I’m so happy.
Not that I know exactly what that means, but I know that was the next
