“SO, HOW MANY SKINWALKERS DID YOU ARREST TODAY?”
Andie closed the door of her squad car and headed for headquarters,
ignoring Chavez. “No such thing, remember?”
Chavez tsked. “Officer Hale, haven’t you spent enough time in Arizona to
know the legends are true?”
“Apparently not.” She strode on, paying more attention to her
surroundings than to Chavez. The beauty of northern Arizona never ceased to
awe her, even after another long, tough day at work. Snow dusted the pine
trees on the hills around town, and the setting sun cast rocky red outcrops into
an even richer hue.
Her partner, Kyle, did the same, flaring his nostrils and closing his eyes.
A moment later, a tiny smile played over his lips, probably as he anticipated
going home to his wife and kids.
A month ago, that would have made Andie sigh and yearn. But now, her
heart beat a little faster, because Kyle wasn’t the only one with a special
someone to head home to.
She hid a smile before someone caught it — like Lee or, worse, Chavez,
whose duty shifts ended the same time as hers.
“How was your day, Lee?” Andie asked Chavez’s partner. “All good?”
“Well, considering we spent the day looking for a giant chicken…”
Chavez butted in.
“Cassowary,” Lee corrected.
“Whatever. A really big, really dangerous chicken with talons as long as
my finger — or other body parts.”
“That small, huh?” Andie quipped.
Everyone burst into laughter, and even Chavez grinned.
“Good one, Hale. Good one. The main thing is, I’ve survived the day —
and another twelve-hour shift with this clown.” He pointed to his partner.
Lee snickered. “Yeah, yeah. Just remember who’s covering your ass next
time things heat up.”
“That’s the thing. Maybe you should be the one to go ahead while I cover
your ass,” Chavez shot back. “Or, wait. Forget that. I’m not sure I can handle
the view.” Then he turned and bumped Kyle. “I know. You and I can swap
partners.” He waggled his eyebrows at Andie. “Now that would be a view.”
Andie sighed inwardly, having heard it all before. One of the guys had
once stuck a picture of Cindy Crawford on her locker, claiming a close
resemblance. As if.
Andie might have the same chestnut hair, trim figure, and
long legs, but she had better things to do than prance along catwalks in high
heels — a point she’d empathized by replacing that photo with a classic
Western movie still of a young Clint Eastwood, coolly lighting a stick of
dynamite with his cigar. That was the image she preferred. Tough.
Unflappable. Smart. Someone you didn’t mess with, or else.
She shot Chavez a killer look and turned to Kyle. “Remind me again —
what’s the procedure for booking a cop on sexual harassment?”
Chavez cackled. “Ha. Gotcha. I meant I get Kyle. You and me, big guy.”
He put a hand on Kyle’s shoulder. “What do you think?”
Kyle shrugged him off. “Not happening, Chavez.”
“Damn.” Lee sighed, holding the door to headquarters open. “I keep
hoping to get rid of this yo-yo.”
