Eight Years Ago …
Wanna know a secret?” Seth’s green eyes raked over me.
“I don’t know. Do I?” I looked from the small, white mouse in
his hands to his face, shivers rushing through my body.

Seth Cain was my neighbor and best friend. We played together every
day after school and often spent the nights together on the weekends,
underneath our blanket fort, giggling over ghost stories and talking about
the latest video games.

I loved to sing and dance, and he’d even made up a song to hum for me
that I added words to. He hummed it all the time, even when I wasn’t
singing. We called the song “Roses and Whiskers”. Or actually, I did. He
rolled his eyes at the name I picked out, but it fit the words I saw in my
head for his tune. A curious kitten nosing through the roses and getting
scared when a thorn caught her paw.

He’d gotten in trouble at school a few days ago for humming the song
during a test and had been sent to the principal. It had made him angry. So
angry that he’d thrown his book at Mrs. Baker. He’d been getting weird
since his dad moved out a year ago.

Hateful. Cruel. Terrifying. Sometimes he talked to people who weren’t
even there. It scared me.

But he’d been my best friend since we were in diapers. If anyone could
help him, it was me. Whenever Seth got into a fight at school or got mean, I
was there for him. I swore to him I always would be. I always tried to draw
his attention away from the invisible people he spoke to. I didn’t want
anyone to think he was strange because he was perfect to me.
I let out a shaky breath.

“C-can I hold Oscar?” I asked, cupping my hands to accept the mouse
his mother had purchased for him for fifty cents down at the pet shop.
Seth said it was her way of keeping his mind occupied and teaching him
responsibility. Plus, it gave him someone real to talk to when he was alone.
Seth was already responsible as far as I was concerned. He practically
raised himself since his parents were always working. And now with his
dad gone, his mom worked two jobs.

Seth cocked his head and narrowed his green eyes at me, his dark hair
falling across his forehead before handing me the tiny creature.
He glanced to his right and frowned, talking to someone who wasn’t
there just like he’d done at lunch today. “She won’t hurt him. She loves
him.”
I took the mouse, breathing a sigh of relief and ignoring his words.
“Hey, little fella,” I cooed into my cupped hand, hoping whatever
gloomy thoughts going through Seth’s head would go away.

Seth turned his attention back to me and watched wordlessly. I could see
the wheels spinning in his ten-year-old mind.
