Tall, broad, and out-of-this-world sexy. And she was considering
giving all of that up.
Aubrey Kaye blew out a long, despondent breath as she kept her eyes
trained on one particular person. Life moves on, and all that. But, dang.
Bennett Davenport—dressed in his Army class blues—stood proudly on
the stage in front of the assembled crowd in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Her pulse
fluttered simply from looking at him. After today, Bennett would be a
civilian. Something Aubrey had never known him as.
He stepped forward, his movements precise and confident, to accept his
certificate of retirement along with the American flag for his years of service.
The vibrant afternoon sky and the hint of the Potomac River in the
background made for a perfect photo op, and Aubrey made a mental note to
reach out to the photographer for her own copy. She wanted a memento of
the day. Next, Colonel Beecham moved to the podium.
As the colonel began his speech, Aubrey finally forced herself to drag her
gaze away from the man who’d been both friend and lover for the last fifteen
years. Not that she hadn’t had other lovers. She and Bennett weren’t in that
kind of relationship.
They’d met on her twenty-first birthday, in a DC bar not far from where
she currently sat, and the night had ended with a birthday roll in the hay.
Since then, they’d met up whenever they could.
Aubrey’s priority had always been her investigative journalism career,
and Bennett, as a counterintelligence agent, had spent a lot of time overseas.
But if he happened to be in town . . . if she was . . . if they ended up in the
same city in some other part of the world? Then they enjoyed themselves. A
lot. If circumstances didn’t allow their paths to cross, they tried again the next
time.
They were casual. They were easy.
They were explosive.
Those three things had kept them coming back to each other over the
years. Explosive made it fun. Casual and easy was all either of them had ever
wanted. Bennett didn’t do relationships, and she wouldn’t fall victim to love.
So, they fit.
Or . . . they used to.
Aubrey pulled in a deep breath, knowing she would soon have to break
the news of her change in attitude. And “soon” would most likely be tonight.
She would have to admit she’d tossed the rules out the window. Or that she
was thinking of doing so.
Had she actually made up her mind yet?
She sighed again. She wasn’t sure. Damn those biological clocks,
anyway. She hadn’t even known she’d had one—and good Lord, she’d never
thought she wanted one. But then . . .
A lump formed in her throat. Then.
Then her world had turned upside down.
Then her mother’s cancer had come back with a vengeance.
Then she’d awakened one day, and her mother was gone—as well as the
hopes and dreams the two of them had created over the final two months of
her mom’s life.
Refusing to let the sudden burning in the back of her nose become
anything more than simply a threat of tears, she shifted her gaze to the threestory brick headquarters complex sitting beyond the stage. It was a gorgeous
building with wide steps leading to the massive pillars of the entrance. Bright
spring blooms lined the walkway. She focused on the blooms. And she
pushed the losses from seven months before from her mind.
