TOREN
Toren. Toren Toren. Three people were talking to me at once.
“Toren, this football is flat. Where’s the air pump?”
“Toren, do you have any more beer?”
“Toren, please please please can I watch the fireworks from the roof?”
Never again. This was the last year I hosted a Fourth of July party.
Though I’d had that same thought last year. And the year before that. And
the year before that.
Yet here I was again, hosting a crowd of people crammed into my house
and backyard.

Would anyone miss me if I hid in my room for the rest of the night?
Probably. Someone had to answer the questions.
So I started with the first. A football.
“The pump is in the top drawer of the tool chest in the garage,” I told
Abel, my sixteen-year-old cousin, who held the flat football in his hands.
“’Kay.” He tore off for the garage with a stream of teenagers from
around the neighborhood on his heels.
Next question. Beer.

“Did you check the coolers in the garage?” I asked Parks, a fellow
coach and friend from work. “All three were full.”
“Yeah, I checked. But they’re almost empty, man.”
“Seriously?” I glanced around. What the hell?
The six cases of beer I’d bought should have been more than enough to
last until the fireworks show was over. It was more than I’d bought last
year. Except there seemed to be a lot more partygoers tonight than years
past.

I scanned the faces in my yard. For every familiar person, there were
two strangers. “Who are all these people?”
Parks shrugged. “I thought you knew them.”
“Not everyone.” I rubbed a hand over my jaw, the stubble scratching on
my palm because I’d been so busy prepping for this party I hadn’t bothered
to shave this morning.

“I assumed you expanded the invite list,” he said.
I scoffed. “I didn’t want to have this party in the first place.”
“What? This party is a tradition.”
That was exactly what my aunt had said when I’d told her I was hesitant
to host the shindig again. But she’d suggested hosting it one more year.
Given the drama at work lately and the scandal that had rocked the Treasure
State Wildcats athletic department this spring, she’d thought these kinds of
traditions might be a good way for all of us to return to normal.

Except this party wasn’t normal compared to those from the past three
years. Tonight was supposed to be a barbeque for family, coworkers, close
friends and a few neighbors. Where had everyone else come from?
“I’m not all that excited about the number of strange faces,” I told
Parks, lowering my voice. “Especially if people are drinking so much that
the beer is already gone. We don’t need trouble tonight.”
“No joke,” Parks muttered. “At least you didn’t have to invite the
Dipshit this year.”
