Jordan
Eleven years ago
Blake is already twenty-four years old and he knows what he wants in life
while I’m just starting. At eighteen, I’m leaving for the army soon and I fear
the distance will rip us apart.

“I’m sorry Blake. I don’t think this is going to work out,” I say in an unsteady
voice.
Blake had wanted our last night to be special, choosing to have a picnic in the
flower field. The purple and yellow flower field that runs along a stream
through Deer Village and although his gesture has warmed my heart, it made
me realize how unfair this entire situation is to him. Blake shouldn’t have to
put his life on hold for me to find mine. He should live his life with someone
who makes him happy.

“Don’t you like the picnic?” Blake asks, confused.
I shut my eyes, trying to blink away the tears. “It’s absolutely beautiful” I
look around the surroundings. It’s an absolutely majestic view. Then again,
Deer Village is enchanting.

The duck pond at the entrance is the first of many breathtaking landmarks
preserving the image of the town, but it does not take away from the lines of
trees which are home to the many birds and deers. The wooden cottages and
cabins with well-maintained lawns are a testament to the unblemished
surroundings.

“Then what’s the problem?” Blake asks with his forehead scrunched. Then he
takes my hand. “If you’re worried about leaving, I told you before, I will wait
for you.”

Blake’s touch sends shivers down my spine and I want fall into his arms and
have him comfort me, but I don’t. Instead, I pull my hand from his, creating a
distance between us. “I don’t want you to wait,” I blurt out, terrified.
“Because I won’t wait for you.”

Blake looks at me with confusion. His eyes are wide and his nose flared and I
know he has finally grasped the finality of our break-up. “I won’t wait for
you, Blake. I don’t want to,” and then I run away.
