Roden Keep, Middle Imparia during the thirty-seventh year of Emperor
Augustu’s reign . . .

don’t know why I always see danger lurking around every corner.”
When the stars I’m staring at don’t answer, I shake my head at
myself. “I also don’t know why I talk to myself and think that the universe
will respond. To think, my people believe I’m fit to rule a baronage.”

I turn from the night sky and abandon my balcony for the shelter of my
sleeping chambers. And startle to see a shadow towering over my bed.
My hand goes to my side, where I am accustomed to keeping my dagger
sheathed. But as I am undressed down to my shift for bed, with only my
cloak pulled over it for the chill, it isn’t there. In fact, it is under the pillow
that the shadow is lifting.

For the first time since coming of age, I wish I were something I’m not.
If only I were a child of man, I could protect myself with the sheer force of
magic alone.

But the Kin Magic of the elves is tied up entirely in our own bloodline. If
someone or something is not connected to my blood, I have no power over
“I
it.
As if the thought of my abilities summons it, a sharp pain suddenly sears
through me, just below my ribcage.

Biting my lip to keep from crying out, I see nothing that could have hurt
me, and the shadow is still at my bed.

Which means it was not I who was injured, but one of my kin.
Forgetting everything else, I rush past my still oblivious intruder, out the
door of my sleeping chambers, and toward the sleeping chambers of my
closest kin now that both my parents have made the final ascension to the
Creator.

My feet slide silently over the cold stones of the floor as I expertly tread
the terrain I grew up in, as though I were highly trained in the all-butforgotten elvish skill of Silent Footfall.
Unfortunately, the Silent Footfall is useless when an enemy looks directly
at you, as the man standing out in my hallway is doing. Even more chilling
than the cold, hard hate in his eyes is the power emanating from the
bejeweled blade in his hands that give evidence that he has already
ransacked my late father’s sleeping chambers and looted his greatest
weapon.

The weapon that was laced with my ancestors’ blood to seal the
enchantment to make it beholden to all their kin and descendants.
Father’s voice echoes in my head.

“My child, if you forget all other ancient Davars, remember this one
alone.”
The cloaked being before me charges, the blade pulled back so he can
make a clear swing with it once he reaches me.

Obeying my father from beyond the grave, I assume the appropriate
position drilled into me for such prayer Davars.
