Flint. My heart ached so much that I barely felt the burn of the saddle
between my thighs. Flint and I had parted ways nearly two hours ago,
and I hadn’t been able to think about anything else. I believed Rishka
when she said my father’s life was in danger, and I trusted only Flint to find
him in time. With his unique power to control earth magic, he was the best
person for the job, but it had nearly killed me to see him go.
I inhaled a deep breath and forced my shoulders to relax. They hurt
enough from riding and my recent fight against Rishka that I didn’t need to
add any unnecessary tension.
Drew glanced at me sideways. “Do you want to take a break?”
I glanced over at him and then at the other soldiers behind us. Dirt and
blood smudged their worried expressions. As tired as they looked and
probably felt, the fear in their eyes made me answer, “No, let’s continue.”
“Good answer,” Rose mumbled from the horse next to me. She sat
behind a soldier, her head leaning against his back in exhaustion. Everyone,
including me, feared another attack from Sodon’s monsters.
“How much further?” I asked Drew.
He pointed ahead. “See that last sharp point on Leashire Mountain?”
I nodded.
“Kel is just past it. Maybe another three miles.”
Three miles. I could do this.
A warm breeze brushed past my skin and ruffled my hair. It was oddly
comforting in this heavy darkness beneath a thick canopy of tree limbs
above us. Though their leaves had turned all shades of reds, golds, and
oranges, they still clung stubbornly to their stems, reminding me of myself.
My mind and heart were always with the people of Loreen and now with
Flint. I disliked visiting other kingdoms, a fear that probably began when I
was kidnapped as a child and held as ransom.
Drew shivered next to me and then eyed the cloak I’d removed
moments ago resting on my horse’s back. “Maybe you should wrap that
around you, Princess. You don’t want to catch a cold in this chilly weather.”
“Chilly? Do you not feel the warm breeze?”
He frowned. “You must be in shock still.”
“Or maybe you are,” I countered. “I truly am warm.”
As I finished the sentence, another slight gust of air breathed warmth
against me. I hoped it stayed with me until we reached Kel. I didn’t want to
feel the cold Drew spoke of.
As we rode onward, I watched the full moon track its way across the
night sky. By now, not even my thoughts of Flint could distract me from the
raw sensation burning against my thighs. I couldn’t wait to climb into a
comfortable bed.
