A , POWERFUL, unseen force propelled the Tírian ship over the cresting
waves. The vessel moved with unnatural speed, quickly gaining on the
Lightblood galleon where I was being held captive.
I stared out at the sea, my breath trapped somewhere deep inside my
chest. Even from this distance, I could now see the silver eagle emblazoned
on its sails. The sigil of Fairholme.
Mithraan’s sigil.
My heart pounded so violently that I was certain it could be heard from
clear across the expanse that lay between us. A signaling drumbeat to my
allies to hurry to my side—and to bring me what I desired most in the
world.
Faster, I pleaded silently. Faster.
Triumphant to witness their failure, I turned to watch the Lightblood
crew scramble in vain, attempting every conceivable maneuver in hopes of
evading our determined pursuers. I pulled my eyes up to see the sails above
me slackening, unable to catch the wind. The High King’s ship languished
inexplicably even as the Tírians gained on us.
Nature itself, it seemed, was laughing at my captors.
High King Kazimir—my father by blood—shouted a string of angry
commands at his underlings, but to no avail. Nothing they did increased our
chances of evasion.
If anything, we seemed to be slowing to a crawl.
I was beginning to wonder why Kazimir didn’t simply cast one of his
arsenal of powerful spells and blow the Tírian ship out of the water—or
whatever it was that High Kings did in situations like this. He was supposed
to be one of the most powerful Fae in existence, after all.
Intimidating and cold as ice, he had a reputation that made others cower
at the mere mention of his name. Yet for some reason, he now looked as
bewildered and helpless as a lost child seeking its mother. Something was
holding him back and confounding him all at once…
And I reveled to watch him squirm.
“You should have known that Mithraan would come for me,” I shouted
over the sound of desperate Lightblood voices as Kazimir wilted before my
eyes.
“I wouldn’t get too excited, Daughter,” he growled back, his expression
quickly shifting to rage as he twisted around to take a long stride toward
me. “Your precious lover is…” But there was little conviction in his voice
as he tried to bring himself to utter the final word.
Still, his effort was enough. The word worked its way into my mind like
a cruel, creeping virus.
Dead.
