WORST FEAR COME TRUE
BLAKE
Dark is not evil and good is not nice.
Blake clung to Kira’s words, repeating them silently in his head.
They were a gift. One he wasn’t sure he deserved. Worthy or not, they were
cemented into his heart now.
At the time, he hadn’t understood what she’d meant. He’d spent days
rationalizing, reasoning, and deciphering. The more he analyzed her words,
the more confounded he became.
It wasn’t entirely his fault. He was entangled in an ethos purely
inconsistent with what she’d tried to convey. He couldn’t see past his own
deceptions. His injustices. Misdeeds. Lies. His absolute tenor.
His black heart.
Blake’s inability to understand wasn’t surprising, considering the events
that proceeded her declaration that night. In a desperate attempt to rid
himself of the emotions that were building up inside him, he’d almost taken
the life of the little witch he’d found on his patio Halloween night. From the
moment he’d spotted her from his bedroom window and caught a hint of the
magic that lived within her, he didn’t hesitate.
He’d descended the stairs with casual indifference. Ending a person’s
life to temporarily soothe one’s own discomfort shouldn’t have come so
easily. Unfortunately, years upon years of such atrocities can numb you.
But with each step he’d taken, inching that young girl closer to the
darkest part of the estate, he’d felt his apathy dissolve. Something within
him, something he hadn’t understood had shifted. It was weighty and
nebulous as it pried at the fibers of his very existence.
It was her magic. Her light. Her beautiful, beautiful light. Breathtaking
and painful all at once. It had uncovered a piece of him he hadn’t known
existed . . . the ability to regret.
Four hundred year old warlocks with a violent history rooted in evil do
not know regret. Or compassion. Or empathy.
Dark is not evil and good is not nice.
He understood her words now
We are conditioned from the beginning to believe dark equates to bad.
As children, we feared the monsters lurking in the shadows and beneath our
beds while the trope of good versus evil unfolded with heroes like Luke
Skywalker battling the dark side.
But Kira saw something else. She saw darkness for what it truly was . . .
an absence of light. Before life itself even existed, there was darkness. It
was always there. Simple. Present. Inert.
And then God declared, let there be light. It was rich and beautiful . . .
and good. Kira was good. She was pure light. She could see things he
couldn’t.
