Present
30 years old
IT WAS MY BIRTHDAY, and what was I doing? I was working. I sighed as
I scanned the paperwork that was on my desk. I knew, at this rate, it would be
late when I made it back home. Not that home was much of a place to go
back to.

After my divorce, I knew I couldn’t return to my parents. My marriage
had ended before that stupid sunset clause could go into effect. My pride
hadn’t let me take a dime from the Dunnetts. I had been humiliated enough
that the least I could do was walk out of it with the bit of dignity I had left
after Prescott Dunnett made a laughingstock out of me.

I also knew I couldn’t stay in Sunny Pines. I had no friends there, but a
part of me had died when I was living in that town, and I was scared to start
entirely anew. What I had left was a small portion of my trust fund. Legal
fees, housing, and bills drained my funds—being an adult was a bitch. I had a
degree but no experience. I wanted to make a name for myself but didn’t
want it tied to my father or ex-husband. It was great to stand on my two feet,
even if it meant that I had to start from the bottom.

Oakhill Creek was exactly what I needed—a fresh start. It was near
Sunny Pines and Northern Willow but still far enough removed. There were
rumors that the three towns would form a township, but I decided to cross
that bridge once we got there. Oakhill Creek was closer to the city than
Sunny Pines was, and I was grateful that it made my commute tolerable.
When I finally scanned my last paper, I was more than ready to leave the
budling. This was really sad. It was no different than all my other birthdays.
Even when my parents threw me a party, it was more for show than for me.
In college, it wasn’t anything special either. The few friends I had made
took me out for drinks and a nice dinner, but never on my actual birthday. It
felt more like something that was expected than having it because they
genuinely wanted to.

Once I got married, my birthday was of no importance. We went out
more for show than for me and then went back home. I sighed as my hand
went to my neck, and my fingers skimmed the necklace I wore. I might not
have taken a dime, but I did keep the Van Cleef & Arpels red statement piece
that appeared next to my nightstand the day after my birthday. There was no
note, and we never discussed it, but I knew my husband had picked it out.
I was a Valentine’s Day baby, and I hated that.
