Todd – Two Months Later.
Istood alone in the luxurious conference room in my high-rise building in
Las Vegas, looking out over the desert. Some CEOs like to march in after
all members of the meeting had arrived to make a statement. They wanted
everyone to know that they were the most important person, and nothing
started without them.
I knew I was the most important person in my company and that no
meetings would ever start without me, but I always showed up early.
Showing late could suggest an inferiority complex in needing to be seen, or
conceit, rubbing in that the others were peons.
But for me, making a show of walking in late indicated a disregard for the
business and the people who worked there. By being early, I set the example
that this business and the people who worked for me were important and
were expected to treat the business as important. Someday, I’d be gone, but
the business would endure. The business deserved the reverence, not me.
Then again, with my teenage son showing no interest in the business or
me, I couldn’t be sure the company would endure, or who would run it if it
did. But I still had a few years to figure that out. I was only forty-nine, which
was young in businessman years.
Today, I was meeting with all the department heads for the corporate
entity, as well as the company heads for each of the companies I owned and
operated. I was particularly interested in seeing the report for the Silver
Nugget hockey team. I had extricated myself from the day-to-day business of
the team once they won their league championship. I’d achieved my goal,
checked it off the list, and now was on the hunt for a new challenge.
However, I’d purchased the team on a dare from my college roommate
and still good friend, Levi Wexford. I’d been complaining about boredom,
and Levi, having just read about the probable demise of a ragtag minorleague hockey team down in Henderson, bet me I couldn’t take it from
nothing to something in a season.
I took that bet, hiring Naomi Withers, now Jackson, to coach the team to
add to the challenge.
But Naomi wasn’t a token pretty face with tits to bring the fans into the
stands, although it didn’t hurt. She had been a great hockey player in her own
right until her early retirement. I knew she had the goods to take the team all
the way. But winning a championship was only part of the bet. All the money
invested in the team needed to be recouped and then some. Between Levi and
me, the ultimate measure of success was money.
