Alicia smiled as she threw the newspaper onto the mahogany desk and
watched it glide as the headline spun and stopped to face her:
VIRUS SWEEPS THROUGH CHINA, KILLING
THOUSANDS!
She looked out into the dark morning and down at the miniature cars
and people below her. The white lights were moving freely now but would
slow down to a crawl soon as the city yawned, stretched and fully awoke to
the day ahead.
“And the world just keeps on turning.” She shook her head, thinking
about the resilience of humans and their ability to get on with life no matter
what happened. This time it would be different; she had unleashed
something that would touch the entire world population, and all eight
billion people would be affected.
“They don’t know what’s about to hit them.” She allowed herself a
congratulatory smile as she turned away from the window and picked up
her phone from the marble shelf in the kitchen area. It had been buzzing for
a few hours as members of her team were waking up to the news.
Alicia ignored the messages and went straight to her favourite news
apps. They were all the same, telling the same story: news of the virus in
China. What she was waiting for was the fallout from the news and the
subsequent postulations of the experts about how this virus would spread
and kill millions of people.
The other piece of news that she was looking for popped up on one of
the French news sites: Funérailles de Jacques Bourlia. Alicia smiled
again; it was all coming together perfectly. She thought about their
friendship and felt sad that it had ended the way it did. He had been plotting
to kill her for her spinal fluid for his drug research. When she found out
about it, she had had Jacques Bourlia killed in a car crash a few months
later, but not before a new R & D Biotech company had been set up jointly
between them, with sole ownership going to her now that he was dead, five
hundred million dollars of his money already in the company account. To
top it off, he had gifted her a 1% stake in his pharmaceutical company,
Erhart Pharmaceuticals. Alicia had been surprised at this but immediately
realised that it had been an empty gesture, as the shares would have gone
back to the company in the event of her death.
When news of the death of Jacques Bourlia had hit the news last week,
the shares had fallen in price by over 40%. Alicia had used the five hundred
million dollars Jacques had put into their new company to buy shares of
Erhart at a forty percent discount. With the one per cent she had been gifted,
she now owned two and a half percent of a five hundred billion dollar
company plus a new biotech company: Vertex Biomedical.
