I pulled into the back parking lot of the Auburn Town Hall, Bullet’s
ominous countdown still ringing in my ears. The agathos had taken
Grace, and this was my shot at getting her out safely. Maybe my only shot.
I didn’t know much about what the agathos did to their own kind who
didn’t follow their ridiculous rules, but I doubted it was anything good.
She’s fine. She’s going to be fine. Bullet would have told you if she wasn’t.
Right?
I shoved the modified bottle of vodka that I’d taken from Viper’s bar
inside my hoodie as I jumped out of the car and dashed around the building,
sticking close to the brick walls. Bullet had given me a time limit, and I
knew he’d probably be expecting an update, but he’d have to wait. I had a
deadline.
Even if I was late, I wasn’t going to give up. Bullet had told me there
were different paths for Grace’s future, including one she would walk alone,
but I refused to accept that. So long as I lived, Grace would never be alone.
I’d get her out of this creepy administrative tomb, then whisk her away
somewhere safe.
Why had I let her go to work this morning? I should have fought her
harder. Grace always wanted to do the right thing—the proper, respectful
thing—and I’d followed her lead since I didn’t have the first fucking clue
how to function most of the time. I’d known today was a risk, but I’d let her
take it anyway.
Was she hurting? Scared? I thought I was getting hints of fear through the
connection between us, but it might have been mine. I was fucking terrified.
If we both got out of here alive, I was going to seriously consider
handcuffing us together. And see where Grace stood on the whole
completing the bond thing.
Do what scares you. That’s what Bullet had said. I repeated the words
like a mantra as I hovered in the shadows outside the front entrance to the
town hall, back pressed to one of the enormous white columns that lined the
front porch. The foyer looked to be mostly empty except for a bored
receptionist, slumped over the desk with her head resting on her hand, idly
clicking through something on her screen. All I had to do was get past her,
then figure out where the entrance to the sub basement was.
And then… save my girl, somehow.
Did the Goddess of Night plan this? Or maybe Grace’s scary goddess,
Anesidora?
Who the fuck would ever ask me to be the hero?
“Goddess of Night,” I muttered under my breath, my prayer skills rusty.
If it gave me even a one percent advantage in getting Grace out, I’d do it.
“Please, please, please, help me get Grace out of here safe and unharmed.
