‘I need to talk to you both about my wedding,’ Sophie said as she picked up
her phone, turning the camera on to check her make-up, and absolutely not
to avoid watching to see how her friends would react. Making sure her
brown curls were in place, she put down the phone and turned to look at
Mya sat on the bar stool next to her. Paige was stood behind the bar, the
earrings lining her ear glittering in the overhead lights, her side cut recently
shaved.
‘Oooookay. And you’re nervous because?’ Mya asked, with a raised
eyebrow at Paige.
‘It’s about the maid of honour position.’
Mya and Paige both tried on a smile, but it didn’t quite conceal their
frowns.
‘Why do you already look like that?’ Sophie said.
Paige cleared her throat, giving Mya a quick ‘Don’t worry I’ve got this’
nod. ‘No offence, Sophie, but we have reason to believe that you’ll
probably go a little bridezilla on us, and now that you’ve decided to do it all
within three months, we’re pacing ourselves, but obviously we’re desperate
to hear about the maid of honour position.’ Paige’s beaming smile at the
end of her speech took Sophie off course so that it took her longer than she
cared to admit to process the actual message.
Eventually, Sophie’s jaw dropped. ‘What?’
‘Admit it, you’re highly organised and fastidious. This is going to be hell
on us, your long-suffering but highly loveable friends.’ Mya had the
courtesy of at least removing the ‘smile’ from her face into a somewhat
more palatable grimace.
‘I’m going to ignore everything you’ve just said and carry on anyway.’
Sophie shook her head and scowled at her so-called best friends.
‘Shouldn’t Polly be here if we’re talking wedding shop?’ Mya asked,
spinning her head around to look for the last member of their quorum.
‘If you’d just let me finish, I’ll explain why she’s not here yet and what I
wanted to talk to you both about. You know I love you all equally, but I was
thinking that it would be a good opportunity for Polly and Bailey to, you
know, get a bit closer if Polly was my maid of honour. Plus she is Marcus’s
sister. But I didn’t want you both to think that I was picking one over the
other. You’ll both be bridesmaids, of course. So, what do you think?’
Sophie finally let go of her own hand, not realising she had been twisting
her engagement ring round as she spoke.
Paige and Mya looked at each other again before bursting into huge
smiles, too big actually.
‘We think that’s a genius idea!’ Mya literally threw her hands in the air,
before reaching over the bar to embrace Paige in a victory hug. ‘Dodged a
bullet there.’
‘Guys, you know at some point I’m going to get really offended.’ Sophie
eyeballed her friends in turn.
